Australian Open Day 3 Predictions Taro Daniel vs. Denis Shapovalov, Griekspoor vs. Botic van de Zandschulp

On day three at the Australian Open, everyone in Rafael Nadal's and Stefanos Tsitipas's quarter will play their second-round matches. No. 17 seed Lorenzo Musetti and No. 21 seed Borna Coric were the only seeded players to be upset on the tournament's first day, but will more fall today?

Taro Daniel has had difficulty with southpaws, losing his previous six ATP Second Round matches against left-handed opponents. However, he has been a bettor's friend when playing "down under," covering the game spread in his last six ATP main draw matches in Australia. Shapovalov won a previous Australian Open match against Daniel in straight sets in 2019, and the Canadian won again in straight sets in a more recent match on hard courts in Dubai in February last year. However, Shapovalov had a down year after his quarterfinal appearance at this Grand Slam last year and only won 51% of his second serve points on hard courts. He has steep -145 odds to win this match in straight sets, so we will opt for the better value and back him to win in four.

Two Dutch players face off in this Round of 64 match, and Griekspoor has a tremendous opportunity to pull another upset of a seeded player. He is currently amid a five-match winning streak, which included a win in Pune with victories over Benjamin Bonzi and Aslan Karatsev. Though van de Zandschulp won their only hard court meeting in straight sets last year in Winston Salem, the near coin flip odds suggest oddsmakers prefer Griekspoor's current form. In addition, the Over is 3-1 in van de Zandschulp's four matches thus far this year, which suggests he has had a difficult time dispatching of his opponents.

Griekspoor was given a difficult draw in last year's Australian Open, beating Fabio Fognini in straight sets in the first round, then losing a five-set thriller to No. 19 Pablo Carreno Busta in the second round. We like him to beat a lesser opponent by comparison this year and make his deepest Australian Open run of his young career.
