Borna Gojo vs. Jiri Vesely Prediction: Can Gojo, Vesely Impress in Third Round of the US Open?

Friday gives us a third-round match between Borna Gojo and Jiri Vesely at the 2023 U.S. Men's Open. Gojo enters ranked 105 on the ATP Tour, advancing to the quarterfinals during his last event at Stanford. He's a -330 moneyline favorite against Vesely, who is ranked 437. The Czech Republic native advanced to the Round of 16 at Grodzisk Mazowiecki a couple of weeks ago, losing to No. 244 Benjamin Hassan in three straight sets. Gojo is five years younger than Vesely, but both players are 6'5 or taller, with two-handed backhand swings, while Vesely uses his left hand for his primary forehand.

Borna Gojo vs. Jiri Vesely Prediction

When looking at the ATP rankings, it's evident that Vesely has experienced a big drop off from where he was in February 2023. He ranked 109 before sliding down to 528 in May, clawing his way back to 437, where he currently sits in the singles rankings. Gojo has consistently maintained a top 200 ranking since last September, recently climbing up to 105, which is his best rank since early April.

Vesely won six consecutive sets in three matches at Grodzisk before losing in the quarterfinals, taking the last two matches to a tie-breaking seventh game. Gojo has not been flawless en route to his wins, losing a set to Alex Michelsen (No. 138) at Stanford while requiring two game sevens against No. 243 Mikhail Kukushkin.

Gojo's stats in several key metrics, including break points saved and break points converted, are notably lower than Vesely's in 2023. While Gojo does pack a nice serve, totaling 118 aces compared to just 50 for Vesely, this should be a closer contest than oddsmakers believe. The best bet to roll with in this match is both players to win a set, yes, at -176 odds on FanDuel Sportsbook. While Gojo has the edge to win in four or five sets, Vesely is talented enough to grind a win out for at least one set, but I'm not bullish enough to invest in anything more than that.
