La Liga Week 6 Predictions, Picks: Athletic Bilbao vs. Rayo Vallecano and Osasuna vs. Getafe

Five weeks down and 33 to go in the 2022-23 La Liga season as Spain’s highest level of football carries on into week six. At the top Barcelona and Real Madrid are already in a two-team race for the top spot, as a host of teams battle it out below them. Let’s take a closer look at a couple of week six matchups I’m keyed in on, and see where the value remains.

Athletic Bilbao enters the week having just recorded their largest victory of the season, a 4-1 victory against Elche, and is currently sitting just outside of potential tournament play in the sixth and final slot in the standings. Bilbao was allowed to rest their starters for the majority of the second half last week since all four goals—including the team's top scorer, Alex Berenguer's—were scored in the first half.

Despite losing the battle for possession and shots, Vallecano managed to win last week, defeating Valencia 2-1 to get back to even on the season. It's also important to note that Mouctar Diakhaby's 90th-minute goal was necessary to secure the victory and that according to expected goals, Vallecano was fortunate to get the one.

In this one, I expect regression for Vallecano and predict Berenguer to score against a shaky Vallecano defense once more as Bilbao secures the win and its spot near the top of the table.

Osasuna vs. Getafe Prediction

Getafe secured their first victory of the year last week with a 2-1 home victory by taking advantage of a Real Sociedad team that had just played Manchester United 72 hours earlier. Getafe had been having an awful season up to that moment, as even after the victory, they are currently ranked #17 on the table with a goal differential of -8.

Osasuna, who now sits fourth on the table with 12 points after five games, has enjoyed a solid start to the season. Given their sole setback thus far came against #3 on the table Real Betis, I believe Osasuna is the legitimate thing, and they comfortably handle business here against an overconfident Getafe team.

I also like Osasuna striker Ezequiel Ávila to find pay dirt here, as the Argentina star has impressed through the first five games of the season scoring three goals in La Liga alone. In their Copa del Rey match on Sunday, Ávila slotted home the game’s only goal for Osasuna, giving them the win and another progression in that tournament.

Combined with David Garcia on the back line, I think this Osasuna team is a threat not just this week but beyond in La Liga.
