ANALYSIS

La Liga Week 5 Predictions, Picks, Odds: Cadiz vs. Barcelona, Elche vs. Athletic Bilbao

As Champions League goes on around it, Spain’s professional league La Liga continues onto week five starting Friday as the top teams of the country are in action. At the top of the table, the names are familiar as Real Madrid and Barcelona sit at the top of the table, respectively.

With 18 other teams battling it out below them, let’s take a closer look at a few matchups this week that I’m keyed in on as having value.

Cadiz vs. Barcelona Prediction

Although Barcelona recently played on Wednesday in a 5-1 Champions League victory over Viktoria Pizen, I believe this to be one of the most undervalued odds in La Liga this season thus far. Barcelona is 6-0-1 with a goal differential of +20 over their last seven games, with the majority of those goals coming early in the match.

Regarding Cadiz, as the season wears on, it appears they will once again be struggling to avoid relegation from La Liga. They now have a 0-0-4 record with a -10 goal differential in four games, which puts them dead last on the table. Taking their poor play a step further, they are the only group still without a goal in the league.

Robert Lewandowski of Barcelona is vying to be the league's best player with five goals already this season and an average of 1.25 goals per game. Expect that tempo to continue, but given that the Champions League is taking place this week, and that this game is against a weaker opponent, it wouldn't surprise me if he took a break for a significant portion of the match.

Even yet, I believe Barcelona will run this one up early and cruise into the second half despite the worn-out legs.

Elche vs. Athletic Bilbao Prediction

Elche, who enters this game with a record of 1-3-1 after four games, is another squad that is expected to be dropping points for the entire season. Their goal differential of -8 is amongst the lowest in La Liga, ahead of just the aforementioned Cadiz and equally poor Getafe.

With a record of 2-2-1 and victories over Real Sociedad and Valencia, two top-tier teams on the table, Athletic Bilbao has plenty to be pleased with thus far. Their most recent game saw them lose to Espanyol 0-1 despite being competitive the entire time and creating numerous opportunities.

Asier Villalibre is the team's top scorer so far this season with three goals, and he creates plenty of more chances that I expect him to convert as the season drags on. Regardless, look for the more talented Athletic Bilbao to handle this one with ease.
