ANALYSIS

La Liga Week 3 Predictions, Picks, Odds: Getafe vs. Villareal, Valencia vs. Atletico Madrid, and More

We are on to week three in the 2022-23 La Liga season as teams are already jockeying for position at the top and bottom of the table. At the top, Villareal has been the story thus far, winning both games with a goal differential of +5 having yet to concede a single goal.

Let’s take a closer look at a few games I’m keyed in on for this week’s La Liga action

Speaking of that Villareal team who sits atop the table, this week they draw a Getafe team picking up right where they left off last season; at the bottom of the table. Through two games, Getafe has lost both by a goal differential of -5 and comes into this match with little to draw on in terms of confidence moving forward.

They’ll now have to contend with Villareal striker Álex Baena who comes into his match with two goals through two games, and I expect him to make it at least three in this one. While the visiting Villareal will have to contend with playing a UEFA Europa Conference League qualifier on Thursday, I think they are two deep better than this Getafe team, and still get it done Saturday on the road.

Valencia vs. Atletico Madrid Prediction

Atletico will look to bounce back in this match following a 0-2 loss at home last week to Villareal, and figures to be extra ready for this one as they look to keep pace with the teams at the top of the table. Attacker Álvaro Morata leads the way for Atletico, scoring two goals through two games, and I expect him to find more success here against a Valencia back line proven to already be suspect.

Valencia will also now be without their own world-class striker in Huro Duro, who is expected to miss at least two weeks following an ankle injury suffered in week two. Look for Atletico to take advantage of this one.

Cadiz vs. Athletic Bilbao Prediciton

Sitting just above Getafe at the bottom of the table is another familiar name (for the bottom) in Cadiz, who is 0-2-0 through two games with a goal differential of -3. The only team yet to find the back of the net this season, Cadiz has little in the way of class at the striker position, and will likely struggle throughout the season to win at this level.

As for Bilbao, they come into this match following their first win of the season, a 1-0 victory over Valencia in which they scored their first goal of this campaign. While they haven’t exactly lit up the scoreboard this calendar year, I do like them to find success in this one led by striker Asier Villalibre who has three goals across all leagues this season.
