New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays Prediction: Can Carlos Rodon, Yankees Bounce Back?

The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays will meet for game one of a four game weekend series from the Rogers Centre in Toronto starting tonight. These two divisional foes are knotted up at 3–3 on the season series, which is a bit surprising, considering the Yankees are far ahead of the Blue Jays in the standings. The Yankees lead the AL East with a record of 52–30, while the Blue Jays are in last place with a record of 36–43. What should we expect in tonight’s series opener from Ontario?

NEW YORK YANKEES VS. TORONTO BLUE JAYS PREDICTION

The Blue Jays will send out Jose Berrios to the mound first tonight. Berrios has yet to pitch against the Yankees this season, but he has had plenty of appearances against them in his career. Berrios has been effectively dominated by the Yankees over his career. He has made 12 outings against the Yankees, sporting a 5.21 ERA, and giving up nine home runs in those starts. His 5.21 ERA against the Yankees is the highest he has against any team that he has 10 or more starts against.

He has really struggled against them the last few seasons, as he has given up three or more earned runs in four straight outings against the Yankees. He has only had one outing of allowing less than three earned runs in his last eight starts against the Yankees. This is a bad time for Berrios to run into the Yankees, as he has been struggling in June with a 5.56 ERA on the month. Unfortunately, the stats show that he may be in for an even worse start to end off his month. On the other side, it has been quite the opposite story for Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodon. Carlos Rodon only has five appearances against the Blue Jays in his career, but he is sporting a 3.29 ERA with 30 strikeouts in those five outings. His worst outing was coincidentally the only start he has against them in 2024 so far, as he went four innings with three earned runs back on April 16. before that, Rodon had yet to give up more than two earned runs to the Blue Jays and had been dominant against them. This is a great time for Rodon to be running into the Blue Jays, as they have been struggling against left-handed pitching as of late. In fact, the Blue Jays are dead last in the MLB with a .167 batting average against left-handed pitching over the last two weeks.

With Rodon looking for a bounceback of his own, I love him to have a quality start against the Blue Jays tonight. Rodon is pitching to the tune of a 3.86 ERA this season, but it’s coming off his worst two outings back to back after allowing seven earned runs in three-point two innings to the Braves last time out and five earned runs in five innings to the Red Sox in the start before that. I believe a pitcher as good as Rodon will be able to lock back in against the team he has dominated against and bounce back in this start tonight.

While I love the Yankees to win this game, Rodon is also +140 to record a win tonight against the Jays. All we would need for that bet to hit is for Rodon to pitch at least five innings and for the Yankees to be leading when he exits. Considering the Yankees are -140 on the first five money line, I believe this is a pretty good price to back Rodon to record the win.
