Bello comes into this matchup 5.00 ERA, which puts him in the 36th percentile amongst qualified pitchers. The way I’m looking to target this matchup is by taking the under on Bello’s 17.5 pitching outs. This is a number he’s failed to reach all season as he’s under this line in 9 of his 12 starts.
One of the biggest issues for him has been his ability to keep his pitch count in check so he can go deep in games. He has issued 2+ walks in nine of his last 10 starts, and 3+ walks in four of his last five. The Toronto Blue Jays have the seventh-highest walk rate against right-handed pitchers (9.0%) over the month, which they should be able to capitalize on against Bello today.
The Blue Jays are a patient team at the plate as they average the ninth-most (3.92) pitches per plate appearance, which can also extend at-bats and add to Bello’s pitch count. Bello has a relatively large sample size against Toronto with 59 plate appearances, and he’s allowed them to hit .389 in those prior matchups.
With this being the final game of the series and having an off day tomorrow, the Red Sox shouldn’t be hesitant to turn to their bullpen if Bello’s struggles continue to compete for the series sweep. Until Bello proves he can maintain his command of the zone and pitch deep into games, I’ll happily take the under on his 17.5 pitching outs.
