The Mariners have been generating some hype recently, ending the first half winning seven of their last ten. Personally, I think this hype is a little premature. Seattle has struggled mightily at the plate for months, and with no Robbie Ray and a bullpen that’s taken a step back, it will take a miracle for this team to make a run like they did in 2022.
Everyone was rooting for the Mariners last season as they ended their 21-year postseason drought. The public seems to be hopping back on the Mariners’ bandwagon as they’re finally above .500 on the season, but does this team deserve the hype? The only reason they’ve had any success is because their starting rotation has been nearly unhittable for weeks. That isn’t a sustainable recipe for success…
Even if the Mariners’ rotation continues to deal, nothing matters until their offense starts developing some consistency. On nights like tonight, where they’re matched up against a capable starting pitcher, their chances are slim to none.
Eduardo Rodriguez has been one of the few bright spots on this Detroit team in 2023. With a 2.64 ERA, Rodriquez was nearly unhittable throughout his first two months of the season. The wheels started falling off the wagon for the 30-year-old lefty, who was eventually placed on the IL. “E-Rod” will be making his second start since coming back from injury against a strikeout-prone Mariners team. He should dominate this Mariners’ lineup with ease.
With the total down to 7, I wouldn’t be surprised if Luis Castillo pitches well too. That’s why I’m taking the Tigers on the run line tonight. Detroit’s bullpen has been solid, but if they end up blowing this one late, I want to be covered with the +1.5 on the road.
The Tigers have been competitive all season, and I don’t have them ranked much lower than the Mariners in my power rankings. I’ll happily “eat the juice” and back E-Rod on the road against a strikeout-prone Mariners’ lineup. Fade the “Mariners are back” narrative and continue to fade them until their offense wakes up.
