USA vs. Netherlands Preview
These two teams just keep running into each other, with the US taking care of business in both the matchups during the 2019 World Cup and 2022 Olympics. After a bit of a disappointing opening-round performance, the United States will have to bounce back against a tough opponent in the Netherlands quickly. While a 3-0 win might not sound like a disappointment, I think many fans were expecting a similar 13-0 outline that happened against Thailand last year.
The reason we bet the under in the last matchup was that we knew the United States would have some cohesiveness issues, especially with Rose Lavelle and Megan Rapinoe coming in with bench roles. While it wasn't all negative, it's extremely hard to evaluate the positives because a team like Vietnam just isn't built to take advantage of their weaknesses. I don't wanna take away from the United States' offense (because we 100% know how good they are).
Still, I am interested to see how Sophie Smith and Trinity Rodman deal with more physicality throughout the tournament. With Rapinoe excepting a bench role and Alex Morgan in peak Ronaldo free-kick merchant form, I wonder if the Netherlands could give them some problems (the answer is probably not, but something to monitor as the tournament progresses).
A really interesting problem the United States might run into later will come in the midfield and on defense. While Vietnam may not be able to cross midfield, that's not a situation the US is likely to run into again. The good news is that Crystal Dunn looked back in tip-top shape in her return, and this is a very deep squad. If the Netherlands struggled to score against Portugal, the United States is definitely going to be a tough ask.
The Dutch side took care of business in their opening-round matchup but overall posted a rather pedestrian performance. They are clearly a strong, veteran-lead team that can compete, and I'm just not sure if they can take down Goliath. Do you know what else doesn't hurt? The United States got a solid 36 extra hours more than the Netherlands to rest and refocus their game plan for this important matchup. It may not seem big, but the US didn't get any in-game reps with this lineup, so that the film breakdown will be critical.
I wasn't sure how much the market would react to the United States, but I do think they overreacted a little to the last game. They didn't look great, but this is still clearly an elite team, and I think the moneyline should probably be around -160/-175. Multiple books have a -140 option, which I think is the right side of this one. If you're looking for player props, I like Lavelle assist at +350. I mentioned this in the last article, and despite the limited minutes, she still served up an amazing opportunity that Rapinoe failed to capitalize on. Expecting a much bigger role in this much more important game, don't think the price has caught up.
