To end the first day of the 2023 Women's World Cup, Nigeria takes on Canada. Can Asisat Oshoala and Nigeria shock Canada in Group B? Stuart Durst breaks down this Women's World Cup match.
ANALYSIS

Nigeria vs. Canada Prediction, Pick: Can Asisat Oshoala, Nigeria Shine in Group B World Cup Match?

I think the Canada vs. Nigeria World Cup game will sneakily be a very entertaining matchup tonight. Both of these teams have players with good international experience, along with a decent infusion of breakout-worthy young talent. I think we see some offense in night No. 1 of the World Cup!

Nigeria vs. Canada Prediction

Yesterday we talked about name value and how the lack thereof can positively benefit us in more niche markets. Asisat Oshoala is the starting striker for Barcelona and is the key cog in this Nigerian attack. She scored 21 goals in Spain's first division on one of the top teams, so there is no worry about the level of competition here. She has succeeded as a top goal scorer in every league she’s played in, and I think this is a good opportunity to take advantage of.

Asisat Oshoala is one of the best strikers in the world but it really isn’t priced like it here. Betting on the clear alpha for a team is beneficial because you know that Nigeria’s goal-scoring opportunities will involve Oshoala. In this tournament, she looks to become the first African woman to score a goal in 3 different World Cups, and I think that happens early.

Canada is coming in as fairly heavy favorites; with their momentum from previous wins over Brazil and Australia, there is reason to believe they are a solid sleeper team. Nigeria may start out the game behind, but that should lead to an increased urgency for shot opportunities.

Kailen Sheridan is very strong in the goal, which makes shots props more appealing than goal-scorer props on the Nigerian side. When these two teams met internationally last year, Canada won 2-0, followed by a 2-2 draw. Because I think we see some offense, I spread out my bets in three different spots targeting Oshoala and both teams to score.
