Looking for WGC Matchplay prop picks and best bets? You've come to the right place. Bradley Todd identifies the best prop bets for the upcoming WGC Dell Technologies Match Play at Austin Country Club, Austin, Texas
ANALYSIS

2023 WGC-Dell Match Play Props, Predictions: Best Bets Include Tyrrell Hatton, Jason Day, Tom Hoge

I was feeling optimistic when I saw all of our top 40 selections get through the cut line at the Valspar Championship. Unfortunately, Nick Gabrecik and Ryan Gerard failed to push on over the weekend; they finished T69th and T71st, respectively. Austin Smotherman was well positioned in T19th with 4 holes to go. Then a couple of bogeys on holes 15 and 17 dropped him down to T36th. Thankfully, Austin held on with a par down the last to secure some returns.

After a four-week stretch of events in Florida, the PGA Tour now heads to Texas for the WGC Matchplay. I personally have always found this a tough event to bet on. The closest I've come to a winner in this event was Scottie Scheffler back in 2021, when he lost in the final to Billy Horschel. I backed him at 50/1, along with Victor Perez at 100/1 who also got to semi-finals. However, last year I don't think any of my players got out of the group stage. The WGC Matchplay sometimes feels like a lottery, but I do enjoy trying to work through the bracket and always enjoy watching this event. Below I've identified three players to win their group.

2023 WGC-Dell Match Play Prop Picks

Tyrrell Hatton Group 14 Winner @ +145 (Bet $100 to Collect $245) Best odds available at FanDuel, click here to bet

Tyrrell Hatton looks like a popular bet for this event, which isn't surprising. He has been playing exceptionally well the past month; T6th at the Phoenix Open, T4th at the API, and a runner-up finish at the Players Championship. Tyrrell has been consistently strong off the tee, but it was his ironplay that caught the eye at TPC Sawgrass. Tyrrell gained over 8 strokes on approach, which was the best he's hit his irons since his runner-up finish at the Palmetto Championship back in 2021.

Regardless of who Tyrrell has in his group, I would still have to go with him on current form. It just so happens he got a favorable draw. If there was to be a threat, it would be Russell Henley. Russell has regressed since his win at the Mayakoba at the end of the last year. Although he finished T19th at the Players Championship, hitting the ball well tee to green, it's a performance he'll be looking to build on. Either the format or Austin Country Club might not be for him, as he has failed to get out of the group stages in three attempts. Ben Griffin has impressed as a rookie this year but hit the ball terribly last week at the Valspar Championship. It's his debut in this event, and it's tough to know what to expect from him in this format. I'm a big fan of Lucas Herbert, but he's not playing well at the moment and shot 82 and 85 last time out at TPC Sawgrass. Tyrrell has progressed to the knockout rounds in three of his last four appearances, and with this group, I struggle to see him not advancing this time around.

Jason Day Group 9 Winner @ +210 (Bet $100 to Collect $310) Best odds available at BetMGM, click here to bet

Jason Day has been playing consistently well for some time now. He has taken a lot of my money over the past few weeks. Although he's been up the top half of leaderboards, I have been slightly disappointed that he has never truly contended. He seems to get himself in positions where it feels as though he will push on, but he doesn't. This is not the time to quit him, as he is a two-time winner of the WGC Matchplay. Jason won this event for the first time at Dove Mountain, Arizona, back in 2014, and more importantly, he won it in 2016 at this year's venue, Austin Country Club.

Jason has been dealt a tough group. Morikawa is a class act and got through the group stages last year. Svensson recently got his breakthrough win and will be looking to impress on his debut. Victor Perez is a player that I wanted to take this week, until I saw he got grouped with Jason Day. I was cheering Victor on a couple of years ago when he reached the semi-finals. He definitely has the ability to cause an upset and has proven it before. I just can't look past Jason Day, he's back playing his best, fantastic matchplay player and his consistently solid play has got to be rewarded.

Tom Hoge Group 6 Winner +275 BETMGM (Bet $100 to Collect $375) Best odds available at BetMGM, click here to bet

Tom Hoge got his breakthrough win at Pebble Beach last year and has shown no signs of slowing down. Most people would have written off his chances after opening with a round of 78 at the Players Championship. He fought back with rounds of 68, 62 and 70 to finish in 3rd place. It was a typical Hoge display, excelling with his irons and ranking out 2nd in the field on approach.

Austin Country Club is a Pete Dye design, and typically, these courses reward decent ironplay. Hoge ranks out 1st in shots gained approach this season, which bodes well for this test. He made his debut in this event last year but finished bottom of his group after losing two and drawing one match. He'll be better equipped this time around; looking at his group, I believe he stands a brilliant chance of getting out of it. Xander Schauffele is the obvious threat, although he has failed to get out of the group stages in four attempts. Cam Davis showed signs of life at the Players. After a horrible run of form, he has the potential to spring a surprise. Aaron Wise has looked out of sorts and is relying heavily on his putter. Tom Hoge surely has every chance of progressing through this group, and he looks like excellent value to do so.
