2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Expert Picks and Prop Bets: Top 20 Picks and More

Vincent Norrman got us off the mark last week as he comfortably finished top Swedish player at Torrey Pines. He was inside the top 10 after two rounds as both Norlander and Lingmerth missed the cut. Unfortunately, nothing back from the Top 20 selections. Taylor Pendrith got through the cutline but progressively got worse, closing with a 77 to finish T60th. Whereas Matti Schmid disappointingly missed the cut. We stay in California again this week for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where we welcome back the three-course rotation. Thankfully, after this event, we can wave goodbye to multi-course rotation. It's not popular with us punters because we don't get access to all the shots gained data, or have the ability to follow shot by shot. This event will be a completely different test of golf from what the players have just experienced at Torrey Pines. It'll bring a lot of players into the mix who didn't stand a chance last week. Below I've identified a couple of players that I'm excited to chance in the top nationality markets and a top 20 selection.

Nick Taylor is a previous winner here at Pebble Beach and not only that his record here is quite impressive. He's played in this event eight times before and has only missed the cut on two occasions. They both came in his first four appearances, however, since then he has made five consecutive cuts if you include the 2019 US Open where he finished T46th. Nick missed the cut at the American Express but the week before finished T7th at the Sony Open. Waialae Country Club is another short and windy coastal track, so to see him show up in good form there immediately catches the eye as he returns to his favourite event a few weeks later. He also has another T11th at Waialae, T23rd at Port Royal in Bermuda and a T15th and T26th finish at El Cameleon in Mexico, which all further backs up that this is his type of test.

Looking at his opponents in the top Canadian market, we have Pendrith as the biggest threat. We were on him last week and he was a strong fancy of mine but this isn't somewhere I'd target him. The biggest weapon he has is his driver and that's nullified here. Last week should've been his bread and butter but he was quite frankly awful. Pendrith ranked 54th off the tee and 67th on approach. Looks as though he relied on his short game to make the cut but even that went bad as he closed with a round of 77. Happily take him on around Pebble Beach with Nick Taylor. Gligic hasn't made a cut since the Sanderson Farms back in October so I'm not fearing him but Ben Silverman could be a dark horse. He won on the Korn Ferry Tour last week in the Bahamas on a sponsors invite. Ben's also played at Pebble Beach twice before. He missed the cut on debut and then went on to finish T46th the following year. Hard to predict how he'll play after such a positive result but he could well be the danger.

Erik was superb last time out at the American Classic finishing T6th. It was his first performance in over a month and he returned in excellent shape. His game was solid across the board, ranking 14th Off The Tee, 10th on Approach, first Around the Greens and 12th Putting. He also closed with a round of 62, which will no doubt leave a good taste in his mouth going into this event. Erik's only appearance at Pebble Beach came at the 2019 US Open, where he managed to make the cut and finish T43rd. I hadn't noticed it until this week but he's got quite a bit of form on similar types of courses. He's finished T10th and T21st at Harbour Town, T20th at Waialae Country Club and has a seventh-place finish at Liberty National.

Looking at his opponents in the top South African market, I'd probably identify Dylan Frittelli as the biggest threat. He played solidly last week at Torrey Pines, finishing T37th gaining on each stroke gained metric. Dylan has also played at Pebble Beach twice before. He missed the cut on his debut but had a much-improved performance last year finishing T24th. Results such as his win in Mauritius, eighth at Harbour Town and T11th at El Cameleon along with his experience at Pebble Beach make him a threat. As for Burmester and Higgo, they've both been showing signs of promise this season but massively struggled on and around the greens last week at Torrey Pines. They both closed their final rounds with a hefty score and I don't think Pebble Beach will suit either of their games. The same goes with big-hitting M.J. Daffue, as he continues to struggle at this level. I'm confident Erik Van Rooyen is the man to beat in this market.

We were left disappointed when we backed Justin Suh at the American Express but after a promising performance at Torrey Pines last week, we are jumping back on him. Justin missed his first three cuts of the season but since then he has made seven consecutive cuts as he continues to find his feet at this level. Last week's T20th was his best finish yet. He was much better with his irons ranking 24th on approach. He also showed his love for POA Annua greens ranking 11th in putting.

Justin played in this event back in 2020 where he missed the cut. Although, he played in the Pebble Beach Invitational a year later finishing fourth. He shot two rounds of 64 around Pebble Beach Golf Links. That's a bit of hidden form that might not have been picked up elsewhere and it shows exactly what he's capable of doing around here. I'm convinced Justin Suh is a sleeping giant. I fully expect him to keep improving as the year progresses. There is a big performance on the horizon and it could well be this week at Pebble Beach. I'm backing him in both the outright and Top 20 markets.
