Texas Rangers vs. Baltimore Orioles Prop Picks: Can Ryan Mountcastle Shine on Sunday Night Baseball?

This week, Sunday Night Baseball takes us to the historic Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland, where the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles will close out a four-game series. The Orioles have won all three games in the series so far and are looking at a potential sweep tonight on their home field. These four wins have propelled Baltimore back into the number one spot in the AL East with a record of 53–30. Meanwhile, the Rangers have lost six games in a row and are in third place in the AL West with a record of 37–46. What should we expect in tonight’s game on Sunday Night Baseball?

TEXAS RANGERS VS. BALTIMORE ORIOLES PREDICTION

Instead of considering which team will win, I am much more interested in a particular matchup between Andrew Heaney and Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle.

Ryan Mountcastle has had a mostly quiet series so far, going 1-9 over the first three games of the series. However, there’s very good reason to believe that tonight will be the night his bat wakes up to end this series. Over the first three games of this series, Mountcastle had to face John Gray, Max Scherzer, and Michael Lorenzen. The thing these three pitchers have in common is that they’re all right-handed pitchers. Tonight, Ryan faces Andrew, the only left-handed pitcher in the Texas Ranger's rotation.

This is a very important detail because Ryan Mountcastle has been teeing off against left-handed pitchers this year much more than he has against right-handed pitchers. Mountcastle is hitting .306 with a .853 OPS against left-handed pitching, while he is hitting .260 with a .747 OPS against right-handed pitching. Over the last two weeks, Mountcastle is leading the Orioles with a .500 batting average and 1.143 OPS against left-handed pitching.

Mountcastle also has a history against Heaney. Mountcastle is 4–8 against Andrew Heaney with four extra-base hits, two being home runs and two doubles. In nine plate appearances against Heaney, Mountcastle has averaged a 96 mph exit velocity and 19° launch angle. This explains why all four of his hits have been for extra bases, and with this game in Camden Yards that should remain the case as Mountcastle, as he has been an excellent hitter at home. Even though Mountcastle has had a rough start to the series, do not count him out in his first game of the series against a left-handed pitcher. This seems like the perfect game for Mountcastle's bat to wake up and for him to hit for 2+ bases tonight.
