You know summer is right around the corner when the Kentucky Derby comes around. One of America’s greatest traditions, the first of the three biggest horse races of the year (Preakness and Belmont Stakes) is considered the most important, with twenty horses racing for over a three million dollar purse. After Rich Strike won the Derby at 80-1 odds after replacing a late scratch from a competing horse, it is important to know that anything can happen in these races. Personally, after one of the biggest upsets in Churchill Downs history, I am looking to back one of the favorites this time around.
Kentucky Derby Prediction
The favorite to win this year’s Kentucky Derby is Forte (3-1). This horse is undefeated in his last five races and has one of the best jockeys around in Irad Ortiz Jr. We’ve seen the odds shift to (5-1) one some books for the betting favorite, which lead’s me to believe his win streak may be coming to an end.
Tapit Trice (5-1) has the second shortest odds, and after selling for over $1.3 million dollars, this horse has high expectations. Tapit Trice is coming off a nice win at Blue Grass, inching out Verifying (24-1) down the stretch. In his five starts, Tapit Trice has won four times, and is considered the best late runner in this race. Even if he doesn’t get out of the gates quickly, he has plenty of speed to pick up the pace down the stretch.

Not only is Tapit Trice one of the best horses in this race, he gets post No. 5, which is historically the best post in the Derby. The fifth post has produced ten Kentucky Derby winners and twenty-five on-the-board finishers (top four). Tapit Trice is in the best spot he can possibly be in to win the Kentucky Derby. More often than not, the winning horse in this race starts between the first ten post positions. Since the Kentucky Derby started using gates back in 1930, the fifth post has been the best post position by far in this race.
Named after his famous sire Tapit and trained by the world-renown two-time Kentucky Derby winner Todd Pletcher , could this be the year one of Tapit’s foals finally wins the Kentucky Derby? Tapit is considered America’s greatest sire, with over 33 yearlings sold for more than a million dollars, but his offspring have never won the Derby.
Tapit Trice possesses every intangible needed to break the “Tapit Curse” and win the Kentucky Derby. Back the powerful late runner to continue his hot streak, winning his fifth consecutive race and the first of the Triple Crown. Along with a premier post position, this horse has plenty of late life to defeat Forte and the rest of this Kentucky Derby field.
