2023 Preakness prediction and best bet for Saturday's second leg of the Triple Crown. We need a winner for the Preakness. Luckily for us, Krabs is here to give us his best bet. All eyes will be on Mage, but it's another horse that has Krabs' attention.
ANALYSIS

2023 Preakness Stakes Best Bet: Don't Miss This Horse's Value at Pimlico

There are only seven horses in the Preakness (for now) as two of the horses were scratched days ago. Bob Baffert makes his return to the track after his suspension for doping his horses. His horse, National Treasure (4-1), will be in the first post position, but this isn’t the horse we’re targeting in this race. We’re going with more value with a horse who’s been seemingly undervalued all week.

2023 Preakness Stakes Prediction

There is weather in the forecast in Baltimore for the 7:00 pm ET start time. If it ends up raining, which I feel like it does every year at the Preakness, there is one horse who thrives in the mud. Red Route One (10-1) is one of the least trendy and talked about ponies leading up to the Preakness, similar to how Mage was perceived/talked about pre-Derby. Red Route One has two finishes in the money in his three races in the rain in his career. Red Route One will win this race if it’s raining tonight in Baltimore.

Red Route One is trained by veteran Steve Asmussen, who knows a thing or two about winning. He leads North America in wins and was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 2016. Rasmussen trained Gun Runner back in the day, and how now been working with his colt. With all the hype surrounding Bob Baffert’s return, it’s Rasmussen who should be getting talked about: he’s won the Preakness twice since 2007 and has an extremely fast horse with incredible late life in Red Route One tonight.

Not only was Red Route One trained by the same guy as Gun Runner but he was also sired by him. Gun Runner was the 2017 American Horse of the Year. Don’t be surprised if this horse follows in his father's footsteps. This horse won’t be leading this race for long. He’ll be making his move around the turn down the stretch as the late runner catches everyone by surprise. The first time you’ll hear the commentators mention Red Route One will be as the race nearly finishes, similar to Mage’s late move in the Kentucky Derby.

It is typically never a great investment to back the favorite in these races. There is simply no value in Mage in this race after winning the Derby, and I would be very surprised if he wins back-to-back Triple Crown races. Instead of betting on the trendy favorite Mage with everyone else, back the horse who isn’t being talked about at all. Red Route One is the fastest late runner in this contest, and if it’s raining in Baltimore tonight, he will win the Preakness.
