PGA Power Rankings: Top 5 Golfers For 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge
The 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge is the next event on the PGA Tour schedule. It follows Xander Schauffele's first major win at Valhalla, as the Californian beat Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke to wind up winning the 2024 PGA Championship and posing with the Wanamaker Trophy.
Now, golfers return to Fort Worth, Texas to prepare for Colonial Country Club at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Emiliano Grillo beat Adam Schenk in a two-hole playoff at this event in 2023, with Scottie Scheffler finishing one stroke back at 7-under-par at T3. The World No. 1 is back in action this week following a tumultuous four days at Valhalla, where he finished strong at 6-under-par, recording his 10th top-ten finish of the 2024 season.

CHARLES SCHWAB CHALLENGE COURSE: COLONIAL COUNTRY CLUB
Colonial just wrapped an extensive restoration effort, overseen by Gil Hanse. It's a par 70 that tips just under 7,300 yards, so it's a shorter course than we saw at Valhalla, but there are plenty of hazards to conquer.
There are still only two par 5s, but the putting surfaces are now comprised of bentgrass greens. It's the same surface we saw at Valhalla this past week. The primary rough is 2.5 inches and the course gained nearly 100 yards in total length, with new green locations featured on a pair of par 3 holes.
Wind can really alter the trajectory of ball flight playing in the Texas plains, but we didn't see much of it in 2023. A hot, dry forecast is expected at Colonial in 2024, so the newly renovated course should be on full display this week.

CHARLES SCHWAB CHALLENGE POWER RANKINGS

Scottie Scheffler's odds continue to shorten, going from +280 to +260 ahead of Round 1. The World No. 1 is on a tear right now, winning four of his last seven events outright, while scorching the final round at Valhalla to wind up with his 10th top-ten finish in 2024.
We saw Scheffler finish one stroke back of the playoff at Colonial in 2023. Returning to his home state of Texas should also help him get back on track mentally following last Friday's off-the-course incident. Ranking first in nearly every strokes gained metric, there's little not to like about Scheffler, other than this extremely short price. He's potentially a great candidate to bet live if he falters in the early or middle rounds.

T15 and T10 finishes at Colonial in 2022 and 2020 are the bright spots when it comes to Sungjae Im performing at the Charles Schwab Challenge. The South Korean golfer looked like he was rounding into form with a T12 and T4 finish at RBC Heritage and Wells Fargo Championship, but a missed cut at Valhalla slowed momentum.
Ranked 31st strokes gained: off-the-tee, including 42nd in driving accuracy, Im at 35-1 is great value to acquire. He's a bit volatile, considering two missed cuts at Colonial spliced with two top-15 finishes, but the value is worth biting on.

A T12 finish at Colonial in 2023 has bettors investing in Justin Rose. The 43-year-old Englishman also just recorded a top-six finish at the PGA Championship, his best outing of the 2024 season.
Ranked 41st strokes gained: putting, 35th in driving accuracy, and 46th total driving, Rose has enough to justify his 55-1 odds in the outright winner market. He also has finishes at Colonial that include T3 in 2020 and a T20 in 2021.

Mark Hubbard may not have a win on the PGA Tour yet, however, he's been playing good rounds of golf lately. A T26 at the PGA Championship would've been even better if he didn't wind up 2-over-par in Round 3.
Hubbard ranks 36th in total strokes gained metrics, including 42nd on approach, 47th putting, and 41st in driving accuracy. The American is also 13th in scoring average and birdie average, as well as 27th for par 4 scoring average. A T9 finish in 2023 is more encouragement to back Hubbard at a lucrative 75-1 to record his first victory on the PGA Tour.

Adam Schenk lost to Grillo in a two-hole playoff at Colonial in 2023, so expect revenge to be on the Indiana golfer's mind when he tees off on Thursday. It was by far Schenk's best finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge, so following the course renovations, perhaps he'll be positioned even better to make a run at his first outright win on the PGA Tour.
Schenk is rested after missing the cut at Valhalla last week, but he's also coming off of a disappointing T64 finish at the Wells Fargo Championship. In three of the four previous events played though, Schenk went T5, T12, and T13. Ranked top-50 in strokes gained: off-the-tee and strokes gained: putting, his accurate driver frequently puts Schenk in a position for success.
80-1 is worth a small 0.10 unit wager, especially on a golfer hungry for his first outright win after coming up short in a playoff here a year ago.
