2024 NFL Draft Odds: J.J. McCarthy Gains Steam for Second Overall Pick Ahead of Draft Day

The 2024 NFL Draft is just days away, and features a stacked crop of star quarterbacks that are expected to go in the top five. J.J. McCarthy has impressed in the leadup, and now has a chance to get drafted much higher than anticipated, thanks to recent momentum.

After winning the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship with the Michigan Wolverines, J.J. McCarthy is looking to bring his winning ways to the NFL. He went 27-1 as a starter at Michigan, the third-highest winning percentage in college football history.

McCarthy is on the younger side of quarterbacks in this draft, coming in at just 21 years old. He is the same age as potential top pick Drake Maye, while other talents like Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, and Michael Penix are 23 and 24 years old. Recent research has sided with the younger quarterbacks providing more growth and value to their prospective teams over the older guys, which could be part of the reason for McCarthy's rise.

While it is all speculation at this point, it's important to track odds movements to see where money is coming in on the top stars. Will J.J. McCarthy stun the league and go second overall in the 2024 NFL Draft? Tune in on Thursday night to find out where he lands.

McCarthy has flown up the odds board in recent days, coming from all the way back at +2700 odds at the end of last week. He climbed up to +1700 over the weekend, before landing all the way up at +800 this morning to be the second overall pick.

It is important to note that these odds fly around rapidly, especially as the draft draws near. He briefly flashed up to +400 at the end of March before dropping back much further. With three days remaining until the first round airs on Thursday night, anything can change as momentum builds and rumors swirl around the top teams.

J.J. McCarthy NFL Draft Prop Odds

Even if he doesn't shock the world and go second overall, McCarthy isn't going to fall far from the top spots. He is -150 to be selected in the top five, where four quarterbacks are likely to be selected. He's also -1000 to land in the top 10, with several teams jockeying for him if he survives past the first few picks.

As far as landing spots, McCarthy has the best odds to go to Minnesota at this point at +140. However, they do not pick until the 11th spot. The Giants follow them up at +275, who have the sixth overall pick. This may seem confusing when matched up with his -150 top five odds, but there is a strong chance of a trade baked into that, which could see these teams move up to grab him if they don't think he will last on the board.
