Founded as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974, New Jersey’s NHL team moved quickly twice, first to Denver in 1976 before moving to its current home in the Garden State in 1982. The team was named the Devils after the Jersey Devil, a mythical creature that roams the New Jersey Pine Barrens. The franchise has won nine divisional titles and three Stanley Cups in New Jersey.
Founded as the New Jersey Americans in the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1967, the Nets have bounced between New York and New Jersey in its time in the NBA. The team moved to the Empire State in 67, back to NJ in 77, and to its current home in Brooklyn in 2012.
While the Nets have never won an NBA Championship, the team has won two ABA championships and five divisional titles.
Known as the G-Men, the New York Giants leaped the State boundary in 1976, after 51 years of playing in New York, to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. Owned continuously by the Mara family, the Big Blue won four pre-merger NFL championships, four Super Bowls, eleven conference championships, and sixteen divisional championships.
Originally hailing from Polo Grounds and known as the Titans of New York, the New York Jets moved to East Rutherford to join its inter-city rivals when Giants Stadium opened in 1976. The team won its only Super Bowl in 1968, as Quarterback Joe Namath famously ‘guaranteed’ a victory against the heavily favored Baltimore Colts. The team also has won 4 divisional titles.
As soccer is rapidly increasing in popularity in the US, neighboring New York City has not one but two teams in Major League Soccer (MLS), the country’s top flight of the game. The New York Red Bulls started as the New York/New Jersey Metrostars as an inaugural MLS team in 1994; Red Bull GmbH purchased the team in 2006. This led to a rebranding as the New York Red Bulls and incorporation into the Red Bull family of football teams, including RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, and Red Bull Bragantino.
The side plays at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, but hasn’t won an MLS Cup. The franchise came close in 2008, losing the final to Columbus Crew. However, the Red Bulls have won three Supporters Shields.

Founded in 1903, some of the most legendary players in baseball history have played for the Yankees, like Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle. The team plays its home games at Yankee Stadium.
William Shea was the driving force behind the formation of the New York Mets in 1962. The lawyer attempted to bring National League baseball back to New York after the city lost the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles and the New York Giants to San Francisco in 1957. Shea was successful, and when the Mets moved into its new ballpark from its original home (the Polo Grounds) in 1964, it was named Shea Stadium.
The Mets would only wait seven years to taste its first World Series success, earning the moniker “miracle Mets” on the way to winning the 1969 World Series against the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles. The team would win another World Series in 1986 but have yet to win a third. However, they have won five National League Pennants and six divisional titles. In 2009, the team moved to its current home, Citi Field.
The New York Knickerbockers, commonly known as the Knicks, were a founding member of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949 to become the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team now plays in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference and plays its home games at Madison Square Garden.
Alongside the Boston Celtics, the New York Knicks are one of two NBA sides still in their original city. The team won two NBA championships in 1970 and 1973 with the help of Willis Reed and Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier. From 1985-2000, star center Patrick Ewing dominated the franchise and led the Knicks to conference titles in 1994 and 1999. The New York Knicks have also won four conference titles and eight divisional titles.
The New York Islanders are a member of the Metropolitan Division of the NHL’s Eastern Conference. The Islanders joined the NHL as an expansion side in 1972. The team played at the Nassau Coliseum until 2015 before moving to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. In 2021, the franchise moved into the UBS Arena.
The Islanders' best period was the 1980s when it won four consecutive Stanley Cups. Alongside this, it has won six conference championships and six divisional titles.
One of the “Original Six” sides that comprised the entirety of the NHL for 25 years between 1942 and 1967, the New York Rangers are one of the most storied teams in professional ice hockey. The team was founded in 1926 and got its name from its original owner, Tex Richard: fans would call the team “Tex’s Rangers” (a play on Texas Rangers), and the name stuck.
Initially, the side was successful, becoming the first NHL franchise from the United States to win a Stanley Cup in 1928, before repeating the success in 1933 and 1940. After this early success, the team struggled and only made the Stanley Cup three times between 1940 and 1980. In 1994, the team won its fourth Stanley Cup against Vancouver Canucks.
Rutgers Scarlet Knights are an NCAA Division I athletic program that sponsors nine men’s and thirteen women’s athletics teams at NCAA-sanctioned sports. Its most prominent team is its football team, a member of the Big Ten Conference.
Rutgers is the birthplace of college football, playing the first year ever recorded intercollegiate football game. The team shared the first national championship in 1969 with Princeton. Despite this, the Scarlet Knights are the losingest team in college football, with over 670 losses. Rutgers joined the Big Ten Conference in 2014.
In 2006, the team had its best season in three decades, gaining national attention as it went its first nine games unbeaten. Unranked at the start of the year, the Scarlet Knights ranked sixth in the BCS rankings, its highest. Despite finishing the season 10-2, the team finished twelfth nationally, only the fourth time Rutgers has finished the season ranked.
Seton Hall Pirates is the name for sports teams representing Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. The school sponsors six men’s and eight women’s athletics programs. It also sponsored football until 1982, but the school dropped the sport.
The Pirates’ men’s basketball team is its most prominent and is a member of the Big East Conference in NCAA Division I. The school first sponsored men’s basketball in 1903, and despite winning the 1953 National Invitational Tournament (NIT), the most prominent moment in the history of the program came in 1989.
That year, the Pirates won just its second berth in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and had a Cinderella run to the championship game. Despite losing to Michigan in a dramatic overtime game, the Pirates won many admirers, and the program has significantly improved. They have reached the NCAA tournament fifteen times, the Round of 32 eight times, the Sweet Sixteen four times, and the Elite Eight twice.
One of the most prestigious colleges in the country, Princeton University is a historic institution for athletics and academia. The school sponsors 35 NCAA-sanctioned varsity teams and has collected twenty-four NCAA team championships. Its athletics teams are Ivy League members, except for Rowing, Volleyball, Wrestling, Water Polo, and Squash.
Its football program is the joint-oldest in College Football history, participating in the first recorded intercollegiate football game. It’s also one of the most successful - Princeton claims 28 national championship wins, the most of any school. Despite this, the NCAA only recognizes 15 of the wins.
It has 19 NCAA-sanctioned team national championships, with 12 men’s golf titles, six men’s lacrosse and three women’s lacrosse titles, and one in field hockey and fencing.

Cane Pace at Freehold Raceway
Hosting house racing since 1830, Freehold Raceway is a half-mile racetrack in Freehold, New Jersey, open from August to May and features several off-track wagering facilities.
The Cane Pace, a harness horse race run since 1955, forms the first leg of the Triple Crown of Harness Racing for Pacers, with the Little Brown Jug and the Messenger Stakes.
Monmouth Park Racing
A tradition since 1870, Monmouth Park opened its doors on July 30 but was forced to close three years later. It reopened 12 years later and expanded to a second racecourse in 1890; it was forced to close and remained shuttered for nearly 50 years.
Racing returned to the site, just three miles from Long Beach; the racing season at the track typically runs from mid-May until September. The track was considered the “Newmarket of America” – a reference to the famous English racecourse.
Hambletonian at Meadowlands Racetrack
Attended by over 10,000 people, the Hambletonian is a harness race for three-year-old trotting horses with a purse of $1,000,000 at the Meadowlands Racetrack. Initially inaugurated in Syracuse, it moved to East Rutherford in 1976 when the Meadowlands Sports Complex opened and has resided in The Garden State ever since.
UFC Fight Night
New Jersey also regularly hosts Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Fight Night events. These events have occurred at either the Prudential Center in Newark or the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City. The first UFC card hosted in the State of New Jersey was UFC on ESPN 5, where 10,427 saw Colby Covington defeat Robbie Lawler in a welterweight match-up.
