Colorado Avalanche vs. Edmonton Oilers Game 1 Prediction

Tonight kicks off the Western Conference Finals in what should be an exciting series featuring the Edmonton Oilers and Colorado Avalanche. This series will showcase the two most electric skaters in the NHL, Connor McDavid, and Nathan MacKinnon.

Both of these teams have had playoffs struggles in past seasons and their offenses have carried them to this point. The Oilers are finally getting secondary scoring, cruised past the Calgary Flames in 5 games in Round 2. Calgary was one of the top defensive teams in the league this season and the Oilers dropped 25 goals on them in the 5-game series. Meanwhile, the Avalanche dispatched the St. Louis Blues in 6 games, scoring 22 goals.

In the playoffs, the Oilers are averaging 4.33 goals per game, while allowing 3.08 goals per game. Their Power Play is 28% and their Penalty Kill is 85%. In five-on-five play, the Oilers are 2nd in high danger scoring chances and 15th in high danger scoring chances against. Mike Smith has had a very solid playoff season thus far, despite letting in the expected soft goal, Smitty has a record of 8-3 with a 2.70 goals-against average and a very impressive, .927 save percentage. The Oilers are going to give up scoring chances in this series, the question is, Can Mike Smith hold up?

In the playoffs, the Avs are averaging 4.30 goals per game, while allowing 2.70 goals per game. Their Power Play is 34% and their Penalty Kill is 73.1%. In five-on-five play, the Avs are 6th in high danger scoring chances and 7th in high danger scoring chances allowed. Darcy Keumper has been steady as he has a 6-2 record with a 2.44 Goals against average but his Save Percentage is only .904. If the Oilers can get pucks on net, which they should have no problem doing, I think they can get to Keumper.

This has all the makings of a fun, fast-paced series with plenty of action. While Game 1s tend to start slow I think both teams will come out firing away tonight. Instead of laying juice on a 6.5 total, I'll go with the alternate line of 7 at plus money.
