Tonight the Chicago Blackhawks are heading to Florida to take on the Panthers and per usual, the lamp should get plenty of action in this one. As I have started to mention in articles earlier this week, the motivation factor becomes a key one in this final month of the season. Some teams are fighting for a ticket to the dance themselves and just looking for that wild card; others are trying to ride into the playoffs hot and roll forward on the momentum they have from the regular season.
The Florida Panthers are one of those teams.
The black cats are the most potent offensive team in the National Hockey League and are truly dominant on home ice where they are sporting an unprecedented league 4.67 GFA. To put that in perspective, no other team in the NHL is netting over 4.00 at home this season, even the Avalanche with a 3.98. They are holding the one seed in their division and are looking to build on their six-point lead over Tampa Bay tonight.
Florida is 27-5 on home ice this season and just returned from a long road trip earlier this week and kicked it off with an 7-4 win over Montreal. Despite the addition of some key additions to their squad before the deadline to strengthen the squad, their overall philosophy has not changed too much; they will score more goals than you. They know they need to tighten up on the back end to truly be sound heading into the postseason and these barnburners they have been playing on a night-to-night basis will not win them games come playoff time but we are not there yet.
They should be good to give up a few tonight and as long as Chicago does their part Florida will do the rest. Chicago is a lowly 24-33-10 this season sitting 25 points out of playoff contention. They moved their main man Marc-Andre Fleury right before the trade deadline so their defensive woes (3.71 GAA post-All-Star break) should only get worse as they finish the season with Kevin Lankinen as their #1.
The full game total is 7-2-1 CHI L10 and 4-1 L5 overall. Florida is 8-2 on the total across their last ten home games and has cashed their team total in 8/10 as well.
