NHL Best Bets for Wednesday: Devils vs Maple Leafs, Canucks vs Avalanche, and More

New Jersey Devils vs Toronto Maple Leafs Prediction

In all splits/situations this year the New Jersey Devils are sporting a 4th worst in the league 3.59 GAA; on the road this season specifically, they are the worst in the league with a 4.03 GAA. It has been a rough season for them and they just do not possess what they need on the backend as far as talent goes to fix things this year.

The trade deadline has passed and there are no playoff hopes for them this season; they must work with what they got. Now to be fair they have played much better in the second half of the season and have been producing a lot more on the offensive end.

Post All-Star break they are sporting an impressive 4.78 GF/G which ranks them well within the top third of the league. They have been moving the puck a lot better and getting after squads early; they have shown persistency where it matters and for that reason have won quite a few really good matchups as of late and are scoring In bunches from time to time.

However, despite some much-improved offensive play from them here in the second half of the 21/22 campaign, their defensive woes just have not gone away. Through eighteen games since the break, they are still conceding a lot of goals and rank 8th worst in the league with a 3.72 GAA. They are on the second leg of a back-to-back hereafter lighting up the New York Rangers 7-4 last night in Madison Square Garden.

Toronto has been all over the place this season and I have spoken about them extensively so I will keep this light here. They are blessed with some phenomenal talent and leadership with some of their key pieces like Auston Matthews and Morgan Reilly but they continue to fall short of expectations and just when it looks like they have figured it out they fall apart.

Since the break, they have been conceding a league 3rd worst 3.85 GPG however they are still scoring like crazy and netting 3.81 GF/G, 4th best in the league. I expect them to win this one on home ice as they are rested and taking on a team that played a pretty wild game last night but regardless of this outcome, I see the lamp being lit plenty.

The last four consecutive meetings in this series have gone over by at least two goals; Toronto has won all those games. You guys should know the trends behind New Jersey 1st period overs at this point.

Vancouver Canucks vs Colorado Avalanche Prediction

Chicago is in excellent form and I just think they are going to be too much for Vancouver tonight. I don’t really care about the standings here or playoff implications, Colorado is ring chasing and they are holding onto that one seed like it is nobody’s business.

Tonight they are rested and on home ice where they are one of the hardest teams in hockey to beat; they have lost 3 to 4 games there in the last two years. Vancouver sends out backup netminder Jaroslav Halak tonight; he is 2-6-2 this season with a 3.41 GAA and sub .890 save percentage. I do not like to be rude but he is washed up and not the guy you need between the pipes to beat Colorado on home ice.

They have won both meetings so far this season and whomped the Canucks 7-1 on home ice back in November. Look for them to put up goals in bunches tonight and stay undefeated on the season series.

Chicago Blackhawks vs Anaheim Ducks Prediction

This game means nothing for the playoff race so I am not going to build a narrative here, I just love the total and want to get after it.

Post-All-Star break Anaheim is conceding the second-most goals per game in the league with an abysmal 4.24 GA/G; Chicago is better but not far behind with a 3.65 GAA since the break. The thing is that is much scarier for Chicago as most of the time there they had future HOF netminder Marc-Andre Fleury between the pipes but he just got traded to go play with the boys up in St. Paul.

That means their GAA should only get worse.

Anaheim is just 2-8 across their last ten games and despite their ability to keep things close for the most part they just have not been able to score more than the other guys. I think this is a good spot for them here at home to get themselves a win but they are going to need to score. Chicago has dominated this series in recent years and won an 8-3 slugfest earlier this month at home but that was before losing their main man in the cage.

I believe this game is played very freely and with a lot of pace; expect the season series of TNT games to keep entertaining as these squads light the lamp here tonight.
