New Jersey Devils vs Toronto Maple Leafs Prediction: Expect a High Scoring Affair in Toronto

The New Jersey Devils come into tonight's contest off an impressive 7-4, comeback home win over the New York Rangers last night. New York jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead, but New Jersey roared back with 5 second-period goals en route to the win. Although the Devils are out of playoff contention, they are a fun team to watch. New Jersey can push the pace with the top offenses in the league, and due to their well below-average goaltending, they are an over bettor's dream.

The Maple Leafs have been very inconsistent lately as they are 5-5 over their last ten games. Most recently, Toronto suffered a 6-3 road loss to the Predators. The Leafs are currently third in the Atlantic Division, holding a tiebreaker over Boston and 1 point behind Tampa Bay. Toronto can finish anywhere from 2nd in the division to the last Wild Card team in the East.

New Jersey Devils vs Toronto Maple Leafs Prediction

As mentioned, the Devils have been a great over team this season, especially on the road where their overs are 20-9. New Jersey averages 2.97 goals per game on the road and they are allowing a league-high 4.03 goals per game. New Jersey's defensive metrics are good, they have solid special team Units and they allow the 7th least high danger scoring chances and they are middle of the pack in expected goals. The issue has been their goaltending, which is not a good formula against this high-powered Leafs offense. With Nico Daws getting the start last night, we should see Jon Gillies tonight. Gillies has a 3.29 goals-against average and a .886 save percentage this season. The Devils have also allowed the most five on five goals on the road in the league this season.

At home this season, where overs are 15-15, Toronto averages 3.52 goals per game and they have a league-best home power play, which is 34.6 percent. The Leafs are allowing 2.68 goals per game at home where they have the 3rd best penalty kill. Toronto is 11th in five on five goals scored on home ice and 16th in goals allowed. The Leafs are 6th in high danger scoring chances at home and 14th in high danger scoring chances allowed. Toronto rookie Erik Kallgren should get the nod tonight. Kallgren has played well in his 3 starts but is coming off that Nashville game in which he allowed 5 goals, so it will be interesting to see how he responds.
