New Jersey Devils vs Edmonton Oilers Prediction: Red Light Special in Edmonton

The Devils visit the Oilers today in a matchup that should see plenty of goal scoring. This is the secondnd meeting of this season, the Devils took the first meeting 6-5 in overtime on New Years Eve. The Devils will not make the playoffs this season but they have plenty to look forward to.

New Jersey Devils vs Edmonton Oilers Prediction

New Jersey is led on offense by Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt, who are both having fantastic offense seasons. New Jersey's issue is their goaltending. Injuries to MacKenzie Blackwood and Jonathan Bernier have led to Jon Gillies and Nico Daws getting the majority of the starts. The Oilers are fighting for their playoff lives.

Edmonton currently holds third place in the Pacific but are only three points up on a playoff spot so these are games that they need to win. To do so the Oilers will rely on their offense, which is hot right now.

When Edmonton's offense is hot, it's hot. Over the last four games, which have all been at home, the Oilers have scored 21 goals. Edmonton has added power play goals in each of those four games as well. At home this season, the Oilers are averaging 3.40 goals per game and they have the sixth best power play at 25.7%.

The Oilers are also allowing goals at home as their 3.37 goals against per game ranks ninth most in the league. Edmonton's home Penalty Kill has struggled all year, they are second worst at 70.3%. They have only given up two power play goals during this homestand, however. Overs of 6.5 are 15-12 in Edmonton home games this season. In six day games, the Oilers average 3.17 goals per game and they allow 3.00 goals per game.

Mikko Koskinen is already confirmed to start in net. Mikko has struggled on home ice as he sports a 3.43 goals against average and a .891 save percentage. He has given up three or more goals in 11 of 16 home starts this season.

The Devils have allowed six goals in each of the two games on this trip, both losses. Nico Daws was pulled in both games. This should lead to a Jon Gillies start today who has a 3.64 goals against averages and a .888 save percentage this season. On the road this season, the Devils are averaging 2.97 goals per game and have the second-worst power play. Five on five however, they have scored the ninth most goals on the road. New Jersey is allowing a second highest 3.97 goals per game on the road. New Jersey's road penalty kill is a solid 80%. Five on five is their issue though. New Jersey has allowed the most five on five goals on the road this season. Overs of 6.5 are 18-12 in Devil road games this season. In 6 day games this season, the Devils average 3.67 goals per game and also allow 3.67 goals per game.

I think both offenses should thrive in what will be an entertaining game today in Edmonton.
