ANALYSIS

Colorado Avalanche vs New Jersey Devils Prediction: Goals Should Be Abundant Tonight in Newark

The Colorado Avalanche enter tonight's contest coming off a 5-4 win on Long Island last night against the Islanders. Young phenom defenseman Cale Makar led the way with two goals and an assist. The New Jersey Devils enter tonight's game, the second game of a four-game homestand, after defeating the Blues on Saturday by a score of 3-2 in overtime. Dougie Hamilton provided the game-winning goal at 1:12 of the extra session.

This game features two teams that can put the puck in the net and, according to their home/road splits, two teams that have trouble keeping the puck out of their own nets. On the road this season, the Avalanche are averaging a third best 3.71 goals per game. Their road power play is also third best at 25%.

The Avs allow more goals on the road than at home, as their 3.11 goals allowed compared to 2.59 at home shows. Colorado's road penalty kill is middle of the pack at 78.9%. The Avs are 12th in five on five goals on the road at 59 and are 17th in goals allowed at 55. They are, surprisingly, 19th in high danger chances for and have given up the 9th least high danger chances on the road. With Pavel Francouz getting the start last night, the Avs will most likely turn to Darcy Kuemper tonight. Darcy has given up three or more goals in four of his last five starts.

The Devils are an exciting team to watch as they are led by superstar Jack Hughes. At home this season, New Jersey is averaging 3.11 goals per game, while allowing 3.25 goals per game. Their special teams are both middle of the pack as their home power play is 21.8% and the home penalty kill is 83.6%.

The Devils are 12th in five on five scoring at home with 54 goals and they have given up the fourth most five on five goals on home ice at 68. They have generated the fifth most high danger scoring chances at 285 and have given up the eighth least at 200. This leads to a problem that has plagued this young team all season, their goaltending. MacKenzie Blackwood was thought to be the number one goalie this season, but his season was derailed due to bad play and injuries. Jonathan Bernier also had dealt with injuries this season. The Devils have had to turn to the likes of Jon Gillies and Nico Daws who is projected to go tonight. Daws has a 2.71 GAA and a .908 save percentage in eight starts this season.

Even though the Avs are on a back to back, I don't think the Devils can contain them for a full 60 minutes tonight. I look for the Avs to do most of the scoring and for the Devils to chip in 2-3 themselves to push this game over six goals.
