Buffalo Sabres vs Montreal Canadiens: Things Should Get Started Early in This One

In today's first article, we are diving into a matchup that I would not have even considered watching a month ago; tonight however, I am excited for it. The Buffalo Sabres are heading to Montreal for a rematch with the Canadiens.

Now neither squad has changed much since their previous meeting just ten days ago when the Sabres left Montreal with a 5-3 victory. No major roster moves or anything along those lines has occurred, yet Montreal is a different team.

Last week they were 8-33-7; they are 11-33-7 now which still leaves them absolutely no hope to make a playoff run this year, but the team is playing to win again. It sounds hilarious but it is almost as if they realized “Woah, if we score before the other guys do, we can win some of these.”

I was discussing this a bit with another puck head, and he brought up a valid point; they finally accepted the fact that they just cannot play defense. They are giving up 3.68 GPG at home this season and are sporting the leagues 5th worst home power play. They will not win defensive battles and that cannot be their strategy; they need to force the issue and try to make teams uncomfortable.

What do they have to lose?

Martin St. Louis was recently appointed the new head coach and he is playing them to their strengths if you could say. I spoke about it last week; they have some talent and a lot of energy when they are playing hard. They have scored first in each of their last three and knocked off three very good hockey teams in the Blues, Islanders and Toronto.

He’s letting guys like Caufield and Suzuki get after it from the get-go and as a result they have been able to get the jump lately; they are playing with some swagger for a squads that’s near .250 on the season.

Buffalo is worse than all three of those squads and in their current form Montreal appears to have the edge here; in the long run however, these squads are very similar. Buffalo is conceding 3.64 GPG on the road this year and have nothing too special going for them either. They have dropped their last three straight so expect them to be motivated tonight and look to do exactly what they did in Montreal ten days ago.

Neither squad has anything special between the pipes so they should not be an issue. We have seen some good play (doused with some luck) for the Montreal netminders the last three games and regression is guaranteed; neither of those guys is going to immaculately improve their game, I do not expect longevity there.

Pace is the name of the game for both squads in this one and I believe they are going to generate plenty of scoring opportunities; both squads also love to get the scoreboard going early which you all know is a key signal for me in a very good amount of our overs.

GIFT’s are 9-1 in Montreal’s L10 meetings and come in 4th best on the season hitting in 34/51 games this season so far. Buffalo is right behind the in the 5th spot at 33/51 GIFT’s on the season and are 7-3 across their L10 contests.
