2024 NBA Draft Predictions
Terrence Shannon Jr. had a tough year off the court, but a great year on the court. After being proven innocent in court only a few days ago, his name is now cleared of any “off the court” issues. It’s honestly impressive that he was able to play as well as he did last season for Illinois considering what he was dealing with.
Shannon Jr. averaged 23 points per game, the third most in college basketball, last season. He shined in his senior year, leading the Fighting Illini to the Elite Eight. He would fit in perfectly as a guard coming off the bench for a lot of the better NBA teams who have picks at the end of the first round. The Nuggets, Timberwolves, Suns and Jazz could all use a floor general with perimeter shooting. I could see teams like the Wizards or Pelicans reaching for Shannon Jr. looking for some upside at the end of the first round.
Whoever ends up taking Shannon Jr. is getting one of the most slept-on players in the draft. I could see him potentially winning the Sixth Man of the Year award down the line, as he commands the floor extremely well and can score from anywhere on the court. He’s going in the first round, it’s just a matter of when…
One of the best “sleepers” in the NBA Draft this year is Baylor Scheierman, the 24 year old from Creighton. He’s one of the more pro-ready players, and after a great combine performance his draft stock has been rising significantly. I don’t see Scheierman falling out of the first round because of his rare combination of height and shooting ability. He is also a great passer and rebounder, and NBA teams are always on the looking for bigger players who can play both inside and out.
Considering Scheierman is one of the oldest players in the draft, I could see one of the more competitive teams at the end of the first round taking a flier on him. He will be ready to play immediately, and has some of the best upside in the Draft. His only weakness is his defense, but some teams will see through that because of his size and shooting abilities. I’m confident that we end up hearing Scheierman’s man called towards the end of the first round tonight. He might even be the last pick of the first round, as the Celtics could use someone with his versatility and ability to score both inside and out.
