While many people enjoy wagering money when they play blackjack, you can still play for free. Whether you’re just playing for fun or you want to practice without risk before you go and spend real money, you’ll find no shortage of free blackjack games.

The rules for free blackjack are exactly the same as the real-money version, meaning you’ll be able to go from one to the other with ease.

There are dedicated free online blackjack sites and apps that you can use, or you can find free games offered by online casinos. Almost all of the blackjack casinos listed on this page offer at least one free blackjack game while many offer free versions of most variants.

Blackjack is a game that evolved from several other European card games where you needed to make 21. In France, it was called “Vingt-et-Un”, while in Britain it was called “Pontoon”.

For this reason, there are multiple versions of blackjack with rules that are very similar but have small differences. The main premise remains the same though, you play against the dealer with the aim of getting a hand that makes 21.

Here are the main versions of blackjack.

As the name suggests, Atlantic City Blackjack is named after the popular casino destination in the US state of New Jersey. It’s mostly found in North American casinos and online casinos that cater to people on the continent.

It’s played with eight standard 52-card decks that are shuffled at the start of each hand. The dealer will receive a hole card and will automatically check if they have Blackjack if they’ve got an ace or a card with a value of 10.

The dealer will stand on a hand of 17 or more, including a soft 17 where the ace card could make it 7 or 17.

Players can split cards where they’re paired or have an equal value, though if they choose to split a pair of aces, they will only receive one additional card for each of the split hands.

The main difference with European blackjack over American or Atlantic City blackjack is that the dealer is not given a hole card. Instead, they’re dealt one card face down and only take an additional card(s) after the player has finished their hand.

This means that the dealer won’t know whether they have blackjack until after the player has finished, which can make the game run a little slower and means the player might choose to double up or split when the dealer has an ace, ten, or face card.

In European blackjack, the house typically has slightly better odds than in Atlantic City blackjack, though the difference is negligible if you’re not wagering large amounts.

European blackjack also only uses 2 decks compared to the 8 seen in Atlantic City.

Sometimes known as Blackjack Exchange, Blackjack Switch is a variant that allows players to do things that would normally be considered cheating.

Most rules remain the same, except the player is allowed to make have two hands and switch cards between them. The player needs to make two equally-sized bets to be allowed to do it.

This means that if a player has 4 and a jack in one hand and 10 and 8 in another, they could swap the 4 and 10 so that they have a hand of 20 and a hand of 12. Any switches that make blackjack only count as “21”.

It’s also possible to split the hands to have a total of four if they get a pair or equal value cards.

However, the rules are not all one-sided. If the dealer gets 22, blackjack pays even money and other all non-busted hands count as a push. The dealer will also hit on a soft 17, though some casinos will have the dealer stand.

Perfect Blackjack is a variant where players are dealt cards in accordance with a strategy known as “perfect blackjack”. This results in the house edge being cut to as low as 0.5%, meaning the theoretical return to player rate is 99.5%.

This also speeds up the game as the player doesn’t need to make inputs apart from pre-selecting whether to double or auto-split where the rules allow it. There’s even a multi-seat option for players who can handle more than one hand at a time.

Spanish 21 is a variant of European blackjack that uses six decks. However, the 10 cards have all been removed from the shoe, meaning that hands will typically contain more cards.

There are also additional side bets that can be made through different insurance options. If the player and dealer both get 21, the player wins. The same applies to scenarios where the player and dealer have blackjack.

Free Bet Blackjack is a variant where players choosing to split or double don’t have to risk their own money. It’s a fairly new variant, having first appeared at the Golden Nugget casino in Las Vegas in 2012.

Like in Blackjack Switch, players don’t get these benefits without offering anything in return. Dealer 22 means that all remaining hands count as a push. You’re also allowed to double after a split and re-split pairs up to four hands.

Free splits can be claimed when they’re dealt a pair (except for 10 cards), while free doubles occur whenever the player has a hard total of either 9, 10 or 11.

Live dealer blackjack has become massively popular in recent years. It is another type of online blackjack game that can be played on your smartphone, tablet, or computer. However, unlike other types of online blackjack, it includes a live human dealer who controls the game.

Live blackjack includes a real blackjack table and real decks of cards that are shuffled as they would be in a physical casino. Cards are dealt by the dealer just like in real life, giving you a more realistic experience.

Adding to the experience, most online casinos that offer live blackjack games even allow you to chat with the dealer using the live chat function.
