ANALYSIS

U.S. Open Picks: Our Experts' Longshot Picks

We have seen +1000 and +1800 winners of the majors so far, but the U.S. Open gives us a third opportunity of landing a longshot winner in the 2023 major season. Will a new course in the shape of Los Angeles Country Club level the playing field and give some longer shots a chance to win?

Geoff Fienberg, Rick Gehman, Brian Kirschner, Sam Eaton, and Tom Jacobs all pick their favorite U.S. Open longshot, as they look for a player at +4000 and bigger that can win on the biggest of stages.

This week's longshots start at +5000 and our biggest-priced selection can be found at a whopping +30000!

So, before you make your 2023 U.S. Open picks this week, check out our team's favorite longshots. This way you will have an exciting pick on your betting card, plus some players you can use to fill your US Open DraftKings lineups!

U.S. Open Longshot Picks

Geoff Fienberg: Corey Conners (+9000) (Bet $100, to collect $9,100)

Picking a long shot to win a major can always been a difficult task but I am going to back Corey this week. All season long Corey has found himself in contention in some of the biggest events. His ball striking can always keep him around on difficult courses. I'm still of the belief that each failure only prepares him more for the next time. Golf Canada continues to ride its positive momentum in LOS ANGELES THIS WEEK.

Rick Gehman: Mito Pereira (+11000) (Bet $100 to collect $11,100)

Pereira has proven himself to be one of the best ball-strikers on Earth, gaining 17.36 strokes to the field in the first two Major Championships of the year. That's the fourth-best mark behind Scottie Scheffler, Brooks Koepka, and Patrick Cantlay. He's keeping elite company in one of the most important aspects of the game and he should be rewarded for those skills around Los Angeles Country Club.

Brian Kirschner: Adam Scott (+8000) (Bet $100 to collect $8,100)

The 2013 Masters Champion is solidifying himself as one of the most consistent golfers on the PGA Tour. Scott has not missed a cut since the 2022 PGA Championship, well over a year ago. Since then he has racked up 7 top 15 finishes, which include three top 5s. He absolutely has the potential to pop at a moment's notice.

Scott finished 9th at the Memorial in his last outing, gaining a staggering 4.3 strokes OTT and 5.9 Putting. It is promising to note that these were similar lightning-fast bent grass greens.

Scott is also peaking at the right time in my opinion. Finishing 5th at Wells Fargo, gaining 4.5 on approach and 5.3 on the greens. He then backed it up with an 8th at Byron Nelson.

Scott unfortunately has only been popping in two major categories at a time. I think this is the week he puts together a great ball-striking week with his newly found hot putter.

Scott has been unbelievable at Rivera Country Club with a win and a runner-up, and with two top 10s at The Farmers, a 7th at U.S Open at Pebble in 2019, and a top 25 at the PGA in 2020 at Harding Park. I feel pretty good about his ability to compete in California. This is the week for Scott’s second major.

Sam Eaton: Hideki Matsuyama (+5000) (Bet $100, to collect $5100)

Yep, I know hardly a long shot, but with 50-1 on Hideki, I couldn't resist. It was either Rose or Hideki, but the Japanese wizard gets the vote.

Matsuyama has been playing sneaky good golf, with four top-20 finishes in his last six outings, whilst gaining 3.4 shots in approach over his last five starts. He's 11th in this field for Fairways gained in the last three months (obviously hard to judge LIV players), 4th in bogey avoidance, 8th in Prox 175-200, and 1st in Prox: 200.

At 50/1 I will take a chance on Masuyama, who has a fine U.S. Open record and has shown in recent weeks that he is playing good enough golf to contend.

Tom Jacobs: Sepp Straka +30000 (Bet $100, to collect $30,100)

Yes at 300-1 I do not need to be told that I have probably gone too far for a potential winner, but I think Sepp Straka's rise over the past couple of seasons is a little underrated, and I am keen to see what levels he can reach when hitting the ball as well as he is.

Straka broke through with a win at the 2022 Honda Classic, but I think it's often overlooked that he lost two more playoffs in the same year. The first came when Will Zalatoris captured his first win at the end of the 2022 PGA Tour season, and the second came to Mackenzie Hughes at the Sanderson Farms Championship, to kick off this new season.

Sure, you don't want a player that is associated with losing, but the fact he was in contention to win three times last year and right now is hitting his irons even better than he was when winning.

The Austrian ranked 2nd behind Viktor Hovland at the PGA Championship, gaining 9.766 strokes on Approach, and two starts later he gained 6.390 strokes on the field in the same category at the Memorial. He has also gained strokes off the tee in his last four-straight events.

Now a top-10 approach player on the season, Straka will no doubt have learned a bunch from finishing 7th at the PGA Championship, adding to a steady start to life at the majors. Prior to his 7th at Oak Hill, he was already 2/2 for made cuts at The Masters and had finished T28 on his debut in this event, back in 2019.

Let's see what this potential improver can do at Los Angeles Country Club this week.

Andy Lack: Mito Pereira (+11000) (Bet $100 to collect $11,100)

I have absolutely loved what Mito Pereira is doing from a ball-striking standpoint, both on the LIV Tour and at the first two major championships of the year. Mito gained over 7.5 strokes ball-striking at both the Masters and the PGA Championship, and now he travels to a golf course that might actually be the best fit for his game.

Pereira has already tasted contention at the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills, another wide, Bermuda based golf course with Bent-grass greens and tight runoff areas. Do not be surprised if the Chilean makes another run at the trophy.
