Charles Schwab Challenge Picks: Our Experts' Longshot Picks

Last week, the golf world had their eyes on the PGA Championship and a win by Brooks Koepka guaranteed we didn't get to see any longshot winner. Still, the story of the tournament was Michael Block, who will once again be in the field this week at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

This week's Charles Schwab Challenge field gives us a much better opportunity to take advantage of bad prices for good golfers as the PGA Tour takes on Colonial this weekend. But, who is going to win?

Geoff Fienberg, Rick Gehman, Bradley Todd, Sam Eaton and Tom Jacobs are here to give us their favorite Charles Schwab Challenge longshots and if you're looking for a lottery ticket, these picks may very well be it.

So, before you make any golf picks of your own this week, make sure you take a look at the golfers toward the bottom of the board that our team of experts are backing.

Charles Schwab Challenge Longshot Picks

Geoff Fienberg: Harris English (+9000) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds

While having no action on Harris English this year, I have been paying close attention to him as he has been regaining his form over the season. Off of a very impressive 3rd place at the Wells Fargo, English became a bit of a popular long shot last week for the PGA championship, only to miss the cut. Even in that MC last week, English continued to gain on approach, now we head to Colonial where Harris has had a very consistent track record that includes multiple top 10s and has never lost strokes on the greens in any of his 7 appearances here.

Rick Gehman: Joseph Bramlett (+9000) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds

Bramlett's game is maturing right before our eyes. He once possessed a single skill set (distance) but has gained strokes on approach since the start of the season. His short game has been serviceable and it's leading to four straight Top 40s with a few Top 10s mixed in. He's ready to pop and trending in the right direction.

Bradley Todd: Andrew Putnam (+11000) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds

Before withdrawing with a back injury at the Wells Fargo Championship, Andrew Putnam was on a good run of form. He won all of his matches to progress out of his group at Austin Country Club, and following that he made three consecutive cuts.

Putnam had a week off at the Byron Nelson to nurse the injury, yet returned last week at the PGA Championship and narrowly missed the cut by a shot. He hit the ball much better in his second round, gaining strokes across the board bar putting. The flat-stick is usually the most reliable club in his bag, so if that was the biggest issue, I have every confidence he can put that right this week.

Colonial sets up nicely for Putnam, in over 5 appearances he has finished inside the top twenty twice, with his best finish of 3rd coming in 2019. We've seen plenty of crossover from the Sony Open over the years, with both courses being exposed to the wind, as well as shared importance on positional play. Putnam has finished runner-up and 4th at Waialae Country Club in the past, which further outlines that he is suited to this type of golf. The worry is the injury has potentially knocked his momentum coming into this, but the price is still far too big in my opinion and he has to be chanced.

Sam Eaton: Christiaan Bezuidenhout (+8000) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds

Bez looks like a good bet for the Charles Schwab after 15th place last year. He’s been playing some very solid golf, despite missing the cut at the PGA Championship due to his putter. The South African has gained 4.3 shots in approach over the last five competitions, on average. In terms of Bez vs. this field, he’s 5th in SG Approach in the last three months, 1st in Prox: 100-125, 10th Prox 150-175 and 15th in terms of Fairways Gained.

His putter let him down at the PGA, but before that, he’d gained over 2.4 shots on the field with the putter in the last five events.

Tom Jacobs: Brendon Todd (+9000) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds

There aren't many courses Brendon Todd is a great course fit for, and it speaks volumes about him that he has sustained a career for so long and won as much as he has.. The good news is, Colonial is one of those courses where you can count on him to play well, especially when in form.

Before missing the cut at Oak Hill, Todd had made six cuts in a row and his best finish came at Quail Hollow, where he was T8. That isn't exactly the course you would expect him to stand out, and this week's venue is far better suited.

That is backed up by the fact that in seven starts here, Todd has posted three top-10 finishes, two of which were over the past two seasons, since his return to form. He was 3rd here 12 months ago and was 2nd going into the final round, and I think a similar effort could be on the horizon this week.

Todd's finishes of 5th, 8th and 3rd here in the past show his suitability, and even when Todd was 43rd on his third start he was 15th going into the weekend, so more than not, when he makes the weekend, he has a chance here in Texas. Bank on that being the case again.
