2023 American Express Best Bets, Predictions, Props: Betting Expert's Top Picks

Once again we come away empty-handed with our prop bets at the Sony Open. I had high hopes for Cole Hammer who was T36th going into the final round. He knew he had to play aggressively if he had any chance of securing temporary membership on the PGA Tour. He got off to the perfect start, two birdies in his first four holes saw him creep inside the top 20 but unfortunately for us, it was all downhill from there. The birdies dried up and the bogeys followed.

We go again to the American Express where we see the three-course rotation of the PGA West Stadium Course, Nicklaus Course, and La Quinta Country Club in California. This event has sprung up a few surprises in the past but that might not be the case this year given the strength of the field. I'm sticking with the top 20 market this week, below I've identified three players that stand out as good value.

The American Express Prop Bets and Best Bets

David Lipsky Top 20 (+400) Bet $100 to collect $500 Best odds at DraftKings, click here to bet

David put in an excellent performance last week at the Sony Open, finishing T4th which was his best-ever finish on the PGA Tour. Despite the positive result, he'll no doubt be feeling slightly disappointed he didn't push the leaders more on Sunday. It looks as though his irons which were on fire for most of the week let him down. Looking at the bigger picture David struck it well ranking fourth on Approach and 12th T2G. He resides in Las Vegas but he grew up in California and actually won the Junior Tour Championship at PGA West back in 2004.

It might explain why on his first visit to this event last year he got such a positive result. David was coming off a run of five consecutive missed cuts and managed to finish a respectable T14th. The fact he's now returning in much better form makes him highly appealing. He's a two-time winner on the DPWT and has won on the Korn Ferry Tour at another Pete Dye design. I wouldn't be surprised to see him contend again this week let alone finish inside the top 20.

Byeong-Hun An Top 20 (+500) Bet $100 to collect $600 Best odds at BetRivers, click here to bet

Popular character Benny An has marked his return to the top flight with some solid results. He finished T4th at the Fortinet, T17th in Bermuda, and T12th last week at the Sony Open. There have been some missed cuts and underwhelming results in between but I'm sure Benny will be delighted with how he's started this season. Looking at Benny's performance at the Sony Open he heavily relied on his flat stick ranking third in the field for putting. That's usually the weakest club in his bag so to see that firing certainly catches my eye. This event can usually turns into a putting contest and the name of the game will be birdies. Benny ranked 11th for Birdies or better percentage at the Sony Open and he'll need that putter to remain hot if he's to go well again here. Along with his recent form, he has also performed well at this event in the past finishing eighth back in 2021. Benny has also turned up in the desert, particularly in the middle east where he has multiple top five and 10 finishes but also at the Phoenix Open where he has two top tens.

Right now at DraftKings, you can pick ANY golfer in the field and turn $5 into $200 instantly. It doesn't even matter if your pick wins!

Justin Suh Top 20 (+600) Bet $100 to collect $700 Best odds at BetRivers, click here to bet

After a slow start to life on the PGA Tour, Justin Suh looks as though he's starting to find his feet at this level. He's made his last five cuts and looks to be hitting the ball a bit better. It's still nothing like what we were seeing on the Korn Ferry Tour last year but it's edging closer to ranking 10th OTT and 31st on Approach at the Sony Open, with just his short game letting him down. Justin was quite a frustrating player to bet on the Korn Ferry Tour, he would regularly churn out a ball-striking masterclass and be around the leaders on a Sunday but failed to get a win over the line. He amassed nine top-10 finishes and had to wait until the Korn Ferry Tour finals to get his long-awaited win. The level of consistency was admirable and it was only a matter of time until he got rewarded. Justin was also a birdie machine, ranking second in birdie average with only Taylor Montgomery bettering him. Similar to Lipsky, Justin lives out in Las Vegas now but grew up playing in California, meaning he's no stranger to desert golf. He's obviously struggled to transition as so many players do coming onto the PGA Tour but there are signs of improvement. As and when it all clicks into place for Justin, this former No. 1 amateur, will do some damage at this level. I'm expecting him to continue on the upward trend and build on his recent results at the Amex.
