Wyndham Championship Longshot Picks

Sam Eaton: Mark Hubbard @ +7000 (Bet $100 to win $7,000)

Mark Hubbard has a fairly solid recent record at the Wyndham Championship, with a T15 and T24 in his last three goes at the tournament. His stats are trending in the right direction to make a real go at this course. He’s 2nd in terms of Shots Gained: Approach in this field over the last three months, and more importantly, he's 2nd in Prox 150-175 yards which will be crucial. He’s 10th in terms of shots gained on par 4s 400-450 yards and 23rd in par-five scoring.

Hitting fairways is crucial at the Wyndham, and his last three events show that his driving is firing. Not the biggest off the tee at all, but has shown he can be pretty accurate. His putter was firing before the Rocket Mortgage. If he can get that on-form again, he’s got every chance.

Geoff Fienberg: Adam Svensson @ +7000 (Bet $100 to win $7,000)

It feels like longshots have become a burial ground in recent weeks, even months as KH Lee won at the Byron Nelson before the PGA Championship. To even take it down a notch, I dont know many people who had those 65s on Billy Horschel at The Memorial. Will a long shot ever win again? I JOKE.

For me, it's Adam Svensson 70/1 on the OC grid. Svensson can be a little shaky off the tee but has gained strokes in 7 of his last 10 events. His biggest issue seems to be getting his irons and putter to match success in the same week, as he consistently seems to be with one and not the other.

Tom Jacobs: Alex Smalley @ +8000 (Bet $100 to win $8,000)

A couple of my favorite picks come up just short of the 50-1 mark, and while I was tempted to go with a triple-digit selection in Taylor Moore, it's last week's longshot, Alex Smalley, who features again.

The same reasoning as last week, his approach and tee-to-green numbers have been great of late, and even when he missed the cut last week, he improved greatly in this department on Friday.

Smalley finished T29 at the 2021 Wyndham, and he also calls Sedgefield Country Club his home course, so I like his chances of finding a putting stroke and contending this time.

After hitting three-straight rounds of 67 at the Canadian Open he sat 2nd after 36 holes and 3rd after 54 but fell away with a final day 73, as it became a duel between Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Tony Finau - three of the best in the game.

In Mexico, he finished 6th, after sitting 2nd at the halfway stage, and again one of the best in the world, Jon Rahm was in contention and went on to win the event, so him not getting over the line there is no surprise.

He was T10 in a stacked Scottish Open field, one of the strongest ever events outside of the major, and he was 6th there after 54 holes as well, so he is consistently getting reps in contention.

All this to say he is getting reps that a younger player on TOUR needs before getting their first win, and while he is being overshadowed by Cameron Young and Sahith Theegala, his season has been mightily impressive so far. At 80-1 on a course he calls home, and won that correlates nicely with the RBC Heritage, where he also finished T16 earlier this season - I am willing to give him another shot at this price.

Rick Gehman: Vince Whaley @ +15000 (Bet $100 to win $15,000)

Whaley is trending right now, earning a T17 finish last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic -- notching his fourth straight cut made. Whaley will be reliant on his putter, which is the 9th best in the field over the last 16 rounds but he will also try to match this with improved ball-striking. He's gained strokes in the ball-striking categories in three of his last five which has helped produce some of his best results of the year.

Joe Idone: Sepp Straka @ +22500 (Bet $100 to win $22,500)

We're going deep, really deep. Take the recent form and toss it out the window (not generally advised). I'm going with Sepp Straka in hopes we can find a comfort level on a shorter, Bermuda grass-heavy golf course where he made a significant run earlier this season. During said run, he finished top 30 in 5 out of 6 events which included a win at the Honda Classic, 3rd at the RBC Heritage, and a top 30 in his Masters debut. Admittedly, it's asking a lot for a win given he has seemingly lost his iron play, but his potential upside sticks out as far greater than the fellow players around him on the odds board. One last roll of the dice for the 2022 season, let's go big and throw a couple of chips on Straka.
