ANALYSIS

3M Open Expert Picks: Our Staff's Longshot Picks

This week, a week after the final major in more than nine months, we have a field at the 3M Open that lacks the star power we're used to seeing on the PGA Tour. Luckily for us, that just opens the door for even wilder 3M Open longshot picks.

Geoff Fienberg, Rick Gehman, Joe Idone, Sam Eaton and Tom Jacobs all break down their favorite 3M Open longshot picks and predictions for this week at TPC Twin Cities and let us in on who we should back to maximize our profit.

3M Open Longshot Picks

Sam Eaton: Wyndham Clark @ +5000 (Bet $100 to win $5,000)

Wyndham Clark could be dangerous at the 3M Open as his putter is red-hot. Clark gained 10.9 shots on the field at Canadian Open with the putter, and then gained again at the Travelers. His driving distance will be a bonus as the 3M Open. He's missed the last couple of cuts here, but did finish 5th in the 2019 edition.

Tom Jacobs: Wyndham Clark @ +5000 (Bet $100 to win $5,000)

Wyndham Clark finished 5th in this event on his debut in 2019 and even when missing the cut in 2020 and 2021 he opened with solid rounds to sit inside the top-30 and top-20 respectively after day one.

Clark can be hit and miss with his irons, but he can get freaky with them and his putter, and his solid Off-the-Tee game could see him contend here.

Clark has ranked 10th, 8th and 10th in his last three starts in SG OTT, and that will be a huge factor in this one.

Clark has made 5 of his last 6 cuts including last week at the Open Championship, and after ranking 10th off the tee at St. Andrews last week, 15th Around the Green and in his final round, he flashed with his irons sitting 25th.

A better player now, than he was when 5th here on debut, Clark can take care of the current form which has seen him finish 7th at the Canadian Open, 35th at the Travelers and 16th at the Scottish Open.

Joe Idone: Troy Merritt @ +6000 (Bet $100 to win $6,000)

A stark contrast in field strength gives us a drastically different crop of players in the long shot range this week. I'm going to roll with Troy Merritt at 60/1 who seems to find his way near the top of leaderboards in fields with lesser overall strength that allow for low scores. He isn't going to wow anyone off the tee, but he plays his game and manages to find a lot of fairways and score which should be key given that this course has a significant amount of water in play on 13 holes. Merritt ranks top 5 in the field in putting and also 3rd when you filter strokes gained total by courses with easy scoring conditions. He played well and nearly broke through for a victory late last season during this stretch through the midwest on TPC courses, and this course at TPC Twin Cities certainly fits the bill for his liking.

Geoff Fienberg: Emiliano Grillo @ +6500 (Bet $100 to win $10,000)

In the 3 short years we've had a 3M Open all of the winners have come from 100/1+, so I probably shouldn't be here stepping in front of 100 with a 65/1 selection but Grillo had a T2 at the John Deere a couple weeks ago, which looks really nice along side a previous 3rd place finish here in Minnesota.

Rick Gehman: Michael Gligic @ +10000 (Bet $100 to win $10,000)

Gligic is trending right now, earning (4) straight Top 40s -- highlighted by a T10 at the John Deere Classic. He's gained 4+ strokes from tee-to-green in four of his last seven starts and he's also gained 3+ strokes putting in three straight. If he can combine the two, he'll fly up the leaderboard.
