Utah State vs. Alabama prediction and pick for Week 1 of the 2022 college football season. The Aggies will travel across the country to take on the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Matt MacKay is here to make his predictions.
ANALYSIS

Alabama vs Utah State Prediction, Pick, Odds: Can Bryce Young, Bama Kick Season off With Win over Utah State?

Utah State rolled against the UConn Huskies in Week 0, with quarterback Logan Bonner performing admirably with three touchdowns and nearly 300 passing yards. He will get a much bigger test in his second game against the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Head coach Nick Saban keeps the Crimson Tide a perennial powerhouse and College Football Playoff contender with excellent recruiting and an even better development program. Heisman-winning quarterback Bryce Young returns and while he'll be without his top receivers from 2021, including Jameson Williams and John Metchie III, former Georgia Bulldogs wideout Jermaine Burton transferred to revamp Alabama's wide receiving corps in 2022.

2021 was a memorable year for Utah State and its fanbase. The Aggies went 9-3 in the regular season and won the Mountain West conference with stellar play from former Arkansas State quarterback and transfer, Logan Bonner. Calvin Tyler Jr. is returning to lead Utah State's backfield in 2022 after producing a 196-884-7 stat line during their memorable 2021 campaign. The Aggies' defense did well against UConn last weekend but they surrendered close to 400 yards per game last season and need to solidify their secondary.

ALABAMA Crimson Tide VS UTAH STATE Aggies PREDICTION

As exciting as it sounds for Utah State to roll into Tuscaloosa and pull off an upset as a 41-point underdog on Saturday, don't expect this outcome. Young will be ready to shred the Aggies secondary to pieces with his big precision arm and he has plenty of help in the receiving corps to churn out big plays all night long. Yes, Utah State saw Bonner pass for 281 yards and three touchdowns last weekend at home against the Huskies' defense but Saban's defenses are stout. They began 2021 by holding their opponents to 14 points or less and will return most of their starters, most notably, edge rusher/LB Will Anderson Jr.

Folks, the advantage Alabama holds over Utah State is so significant, that there are currently no Moneyline odds for either team. When assessing the spread and over/under point total, things get more interesting. Particularly with the spread, as the Crimson Tide are being held to a high standard of winning by 41 points. They exceeded this win margin twice in 2021 against Southern Mississippi and New Mexico State. The Aggies have a lot of returning talent on their offense, especially their offensive line while possessing the ability to manufacture yardage through the air or on the ground. It's this dual-threat playcalling ability that convinces me that Utah State will cover the spread despite the adverse conditions.
