The Nationals and the Mets kick off the 4th of July MLB slate with a morning game. Will the bats get to Jose Quintana and Jake Irvin? Krabs shares his New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals prediction.
ANALYSIS

New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals Prediction: Will the Bats Get to Jose Quintana, Jake Irvin?

Every year on the 4th of July, the Nationals play in an early morning game. They typically have good success in these standalone games on the 4th. Maybe it’s just a coincidence, or maybe the Nationals show up a little extra motivated to the park on the country’s birthday. Either way, Washington shows up on their special day…

New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals Prediction

The Nationals got a much needed victory after blowing the first two games of this series in extra innings. James Wood delivered in his third major league game, driving in the winning run late in last nights epic battle with the Mets. Will the Nationals scrappy offense show up once again in the final game of this series with their NL East rival?

I’m willing to bet the Nationals offense shows up in a big way on Thursday. They’ve been hitting left-handed pitching a little better of late and they’ve already seen two lefties in this series. Jose Quintana has been really solid for the Mets of late. He owned a 3.38 ERA in the month of June, but can the crafty veteran keep overperforming? Looking at some of his pitching props for today, it doesn’t look like he’s going to have his best outing on the road against the Nats…

Speaking of pitching on the road, Quintana’s ERA on the road is nearly double his ERA at Citi Field. Quintana has struggled mightily on the road this season, and I’m not expecting anything different against a scrappy Nationals team looking to even up the series on Thursday. Luckily for the Mets, Quintana won’t be the only pitcher struggling in the last game of this series.

Jake Irvin is coming off one of the best starts of his career, lowering his ERA to 3.03 this season. He allowed only one hit in 6 innings against Tampa Bay. The problem with Jake Irvin is that he actually has worse splits at home this season than when he pitches on the road. His ERA is nearly double at Nats Park than it is on the road. For some reason, Irvin struggles pitching in DC, and I don’t see that getting any better against a red-hot Mets team looking to avenge last night’s loss.

The starting pitchers won’t be the only ones getting roughed up on Thursday. The Nationals bullpen is overworked and has been regressing immensely of late, and the Mets bullpen wasn’t any good to begin the season and has continued that trend. Fade the pitchers on both of these teams on Thursday’s standalone morning game on the 4th of July. I’ll meet you at the cash counter when the over cashes by the seventh inning stretch…
