2022 Tour de France Stage 16 Preview & Overall Odds & Picks

The 2022 Tour de France pauses today for its final day of rest, as the riders remain in Carcassonne as they prepare for the final six stages. Beginning early on Tuesday, Stage 16 will commence from Carcassonne to Foix, as the final sprint is officially on to crown a winner come next Monday in Paris. 

Belgian Jasper Philipsen posted the best time in Stage 15 to take the Yellow Jacket, however, no one in the stage’s top three cracked the top 10 in overall standings with their performance. The race’s leader since Stage 11, Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard, lost some time in the ride from Rodez to Carcassonne, but still did enough to maintain his lead. 

Previous race favorite Primoz Roglic has still not returned following a crash in earlier stages, which has put the pressure on teammate Vingegaard that much more significant. Things got worse for Vingegaard and team Jumbo-Visa, as a former top three Tour de France finisher Steven Kruiswijk crashed in Stage 15 and never returned. It's worth noting that Vingegaard was a part of the same crash, but did return with no damage to maintain his lead.

Podium Finish: Romain Bardet +220 (Bet $100 to win $220)

Fully rested for the first time since July 11th, this stage should be relatively quiet for the guys at the top, as the toughest climbs of the race lie just ahead in the coming days. The 178km ride will be mostly flat for the first 110 km, as the remaining stretch is filled with steep and narrow hills that most riders will be looking to just avoid disaster. 

Taking a look at the odds board and how things have shaped up thus far, it's now or never for French rider Romain Bardet who sits just 18 seconds off of third place with six stages remaining. The Mountains Classification winner in 2019, Bardet excels in the mountainous stages of these races, and I expect to see that down the stretch here. 

A three-time stage winner, Bardet won the Tour of the Alps race earlier this year and has all the tools in his arsenal to finish high in this race. Look for him to make his move starting early this week.
