2022 Tour de France Odds and Picks: Geraint Thomas Poised For Big Finish at Tour de France

Stage 11 of the 2022 Tour de France is officially in the books, as Albertville to Col Du Serre Chevalier is now complete. And boy, was it a big one.

The stage leader going into the day, Nairo Quintana, was passed early by Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard who never looked back, finishing the stage almost three full minutes ahead of Quintana who struggled throughout the day. Early favorites Primoz Roglic and Tadej Pogacar also struggled throughout the day, losing pace and ultimately sliding down the leaderboard.

Now, Vineggaard’s Jumo-Visma team holds a commanding lead following the slopes of Col Du Granon, as the Alps have proved a moving ground for Vineggard and the team. For Pogacar, the race’s favorite heading into its opening stages, the 23-year-old is still holding out home saying after the stage, “it’s not over yet. Today I lost three minutes, maybe tomorrow I gain three minutes. I’ll keep fighting until the end.”

Tomorrow we officially begin the home stretch of the 2022 Tour de France, as the race to the 21st (and final stage) begins with Stage 12. In the last of the Alps stages, the racers will start in Briancon, finishing in Alpe D’Heuz before coming out of the mountains.

Here, winds are always a factor, as the 165.1 km stretch comes down through the Maurienne Valley and features two steps and then drops, getting as high as 2,000m above sea level. This will be the first time since 2018 that this stretch is featured in the Tour and one of the toughest sections up to that point.

Let’s take a closer look at one rider who I think will fair well and set himself up for a strong finish in the 2022 Tour de France.

Tadej Pogacar +300 (Bet $100 to win $300)

Geraint Thomas +2300 (Bet $100 to win $2300)

Podium Finish: Geraint Thomas -155 (Bet $155 to win $100)

Currently sitting in fourth place and just 1:38 minutes off of the lead, Welshman Geraint Thomas should make up some ground here in Stage 12 that will parlay well into where he finishes. In the 2018 Tour de France took the yellow jersey in this difficult stage, pulling away in the last few hundred meters.

He’d go on two win three stages that year on his way to winning the whole race, and this is the perfect stage to set up him on course to get to that podium again. Winning the Tour de Romandie in 2021 and Tour de Suisse earlier this year, Thomas very much still has the stuff to compete at the very highest level.

With the previous favorite Tadej Pogacar on the ropes with limited experience compared to Thomas, I like for Thomas to find the podium come July 24th.
