2022 Winter Olympics Preview: Will Shaun White Reign Supreme?

The Winter Olympics are finally back and that means it’s time for snowboarding. Will Shaun White reclaim his spot at the top of the world in his final Olympics? Oddsmakers don’t think it’s going to be a great send-off for the legendary snowboarder, but they do think he’s got a shot.

Shaun White has dominated this event historically. He’s won Gold in three of the last four Winter Olympics, he’s the only three-time winner in the event’s short history. Yet, oddsmakers don’t believe he’ll win it a fourth time. Instead, he’s given +700 odds, or an implied 12.5% chance to win Gold. That puts him third on the market behind 2018 Bronze Medalist Scotty James, +300, and the 2-time reigning Silver medalist Ayumu Hirano, +275.

20-year-old Yuto Totsuka is also given decent odds at +700 after finishing in 11th in 2018. Ruka Hirano, unrelated to Ayumu Hirano, is also given good at +900 or an implied 10% chance. Though, Ayumu’s younger brother Kaishu Hirano is also competing and he’s given +2100 odds.

Shaun White is a legend, but he’s got some stiff competition this year. Ayumu Hirano surely wants to win Gold after winning Silver at the last two Olympics. Scotty James took Bronze in 2018 and he’s certainly improved. That’s before even mentioning fresh young faces like Yuto Totsuka, Ruka Hirano, and Kaishu Hirano. The future of snowboarding is here and it’s ready to fight against the greatest to ever do it. Will anyone dethrone White before he calls it a career? Oddsmakers think it’s a strong possibility.
