Charles Schwab Challenge: Berger Beats Morikawa in First Hole of Playoff
The first PGA Tour event in more than three months lived up to all the hype this weekend, as Daniel Berger defeated Collin Morikawa in a playoff to win the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial CC.
Berger came into the tournament as a longshot at +8000, which gave him a 1.2% implied probability to win. It was his third career win and first since 2017.
Berger shot an opening-round 65, good for five-under, on Thursday and followed it with a 67 in Round 2 and 3 before closing out with a 66 on Sunday.
He needed a birdie on 18 Sunday to get into the clubhouse at 15-under. He was the sole leader until Morikawa finished at 15-under a few holes later. Morikawa had a makeable putt on 18 to get to 16-under but left it left of the hole.
The playoff started on the par-4 17th hole and ended with another missed putt by Morikawa. After Berger tapped in for par from a foot away, Morikawa had a 3-foot putt to force another hole, but it lipped out to give Berger the win.
Morikawa started the event at +4500, good for a 2.2% implied probability of winning the Charles Schwab Challenge.
