Top Five Betting Events Of 2022: Which Sporting Events Were the Most Bet on This Year?

A lot of people wonder, throughout the year, just what sporting event is the most popular in the United States. Sure, we always hear it's the Super Bowl, but is that the case?

Well, now we finally have the answer.

Thanks to the folk over at GeoComply, we've narrowed it down to the five most popular sporting events in the betting world in 2022. The data used Geolocation checks within sportsbook apps to compile which events were the most bet on.

Throughout the year, we have the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup, NBA Finals, College Football Playoffs and much more. We always hear about where each lands when it comes to the most popular betting events of the year, but now we have the concrete data to support it.

Top Five Betting Events Of 2022

5. Stanley Cup Final (1.9 Million Geolocation Checks)

I'm surprised to see the Stanley Cup Finals on here. Not because I don't think hockey is popular, but because I fully expected the World Series to appear here. But, as you'll see down below, the World Series is nowhere to be found on the top-five list. This past year, the Stanley Cup Finals consisted of the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Colorado Avalanche. Tampa Bay came in looking for a 3-peat after winning in 2020 and 2021, but the avalanche won in six games and took home the Cup.

4. NCAA Men's Basketball Final (4.8 Million Geolocation Checks)

This should be a surprise to absolutely no one. For starters, March Madness is one of the premier betting events in the country and the Championship Game is the culmination of that event. But, the main reason I'm not surprised to see this event here is that it featured two of the most successful programs ever in Kansas and North Carolina. The Tar Heels made a cinderella run to the Finals as a No. 8 seed, but it was top-seeded Kansas that came out on top, 72-69. It's amazing to see just how many more people were betting on the NCAA Men's Basketball Final than the Stanley Cup despite the two events being next to each other on the list.

3. NBA Finals (5.1 Million Geolocation Checks)

After everyone hyping up how disinterested most of the sporting world was with the NBA Finals this past season, it still came in as the third most popular sports betting event of 2022. We got the old guard of the NBA, the Golden State Warriors, taking on the new blood in the Boston Celtics. In the end, it was the Warriors that pulled out on top in six games, but it was an awesome series. It's interesting to see a sport that is so dependent on individual star power just barely surpassing a sport like the NCAA Men's Basketball Final when it comes to betting, but it just goes to show you the power of March Madness.

2. FIFA World Cup Final (7.9 Million Geolocation Checks)

The 2022 World Cup was much more popular in the United States than the 2018 version because the United States was actually involved this time around. On top of that, the timing for most games was perfect and a 10:00 am ET start on Sunday made sure that bettors were up and ready to go and not busy with NFL Sunday yet. Argentina took on France in what is now being referred to as one of the greatest soccer games ever played. Eventually, defending champion France was taken down by Lionel Messi and Argentina. 7.9 million people bet on the World Cup Final, making it the second-most bet on sporting event of 2022.

1. Super Bowl LVI (23.5 Million Geolocation Checks)

Is anyone really shocked to see the Super Bowl in the No. 1 spot when it comes to the most popular sports betting events of 2022? The other four events on this list combine to rack up 19.7 million geolocation checks. Meanwhile, the Super Bowl did 23.5 million itself. This past year's Super Bowl was at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. It was a star-studded event that featured on of the sport's most promising young quarterbacks, Joe Burrow, taking on the best defense in the league. It was a perfect storm for the NFL and it ended with Burrow coming up just a bit short and the Super Bowl being the most-bet sporting event of the year in 2022.
