2020 Preakness Stakes Preview

Authentic shocked the horse racing world last month, holding off heavy favorite and Belmont Stakes winner Tiz The Law down the stretch in order to win the second leg of this year’s Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby.

Now, with this year’s third leg, the Preakness Stakes, right around the corner, Authentic takes on a new role as the favorite to win on the morning line.

With the Triple Crown off the table, Tiz The Law will not be racing at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday. Instead, it’ll be up to horses like Art Collector, Swiss Skydiver and Thousand Words to pull off the upset.

Last year’s Triple Crown races didn’t have a single repeat winner, as Country House, War of Will and Sir Winston won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes, respectively. This year, Authentic will be looking to keep the momentum from the Derby rolling into Pimlico.

2020 Preakness Stakes Betting Breakdown

As the favorite, Authentic comes into Saturday’s Grade 1 Preakness Stakes at 9/5 on the morning line. For comparison, the horse opened at 8/1 when it won the Kentucky Derby. Since it crossed first at the Derby, a whopping 43.88% of all Preakness Stakes ‘winner’ bets have been on Authentic, by far the most of any horse.

Authentic’s trainer, Bob Baffert, is no stranger to success at Pimlico. He’s won the Preakness Stakes seven times as a trainer in his lifetime.

The next shortest odds in the field belong to Art Collector at 5/2 on the morning line, who has been backed by 12.24% of bettors, the second most popular pick in the field.

Art Collector did not run at the Kentucky Derby but has won its last five times out, including a win over Swiss Skydiver in July’s Blue Grass Stakes. Art Collector’s sire, Bernardini, won the 2006 Preakness Stakes, the same race in which heavy favorite Barbaro went down with an injury.

Swiss Skydiver and Thousand Words both come in at 6/1, tied for the third shortest odds in the field. 8.16% of bettors are backing Swiss Skydiver to win. Meanwhile, just 5.1% are behind Thousand Words.
