F1 Hungarian GP Odds and Picks: Can Lewis Hamilton Keep His Recent Streak Going?

We’re now past the halfway point in the 2022 Formula One (F1) season, as 2021 champion Max Verstappen leads the way in the drivers' standings, while his team (Red Bull) leads the way in the constructor standings. Following yet another win last week in France from Verstappen, we remain in Europe for this week as the F1 circuit heads to Hungary for the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix. 

This week, the track in Mogyorod is amongst the tightest of the season, with plenty of turns designed to slow these racers down and really separate the men from the boys when it comes to driving skill. With the tight turning radius, the new F1 car rules will be put to the test, as the track will not just test the drivers, but the durability and acumen of the cars. 

Because of this, qualifying becomes even more important, and thus far, it’s been Ferrari leading the way in practice, as Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. currently sit in first and third respectively. For Ferrari, who trails Red Bull by 82 points now in the constructors' race, they’ll need to recover quickly from the disaster that was the French Grand Prix last week. 

In addition to Sainz finishing fifth, Leclerc, who is also the closest to Verstappen in the standings sitting 63 points back, crashed out of the race entirely; failing to finish. Now heading to Budapest, qualifying will be all the more critical, as this track is known for being difficult to get around other drivers due to the tight corners and slower speeds; but this is in part what the offseason car modifications regulated were put in place for, more action. 

While Red Bull and Ferrari have dominated the headlines this season, there’s another team, with two elite drivers, slowly creeping up the standings as the home stretch of the 2022 F1 seasons rounds into its final stretch of track.

They keep offering it at plus money, so I’ll keep hammering it and cashing with Hamilton to find the top three again here in Budapest. Looking back over his past four starts, Hamilton has found the podium in each of them, with his first and second place of what has otherwise been a frustrating season coming last week in Paris. 

While he couldn’t get it done here last year, Hamilton did win the Hungarian GP in 2020, marking the eighth time he’s won this race, double the amount of times the next closest competitor had won (Michael Schumacher). In fact, with the win, he tied Schumacher for the most wins of any Grand Prix, with Schumacher having won the French Grand Prix eight times as well. 

While he’s struggling through the practice sessions as of Friday, I look for a focused Hamilton to do enough to put himself in shouting distance come Sunday in Budapest.
