It was another victorious week for Red Bull Racing in Monaco a couple of weekends ago, as Sergio Perez got the victory following a week prior where he was asked to step aside so Max Verstappen could get his. Even still, Verstappen found the podium, finishing third as Red Bull picked up 40 points on the week to move further ahead of Ferrari in the Constructors’ standings.

Following a week off in between, Formula One (F1) now takes its roadshow to the Middle East for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix located in the coastal town of Baku. Coming into the week, F1’s reigning champion Verstappen is ahead in the Drivers’ standings by just nine points over Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc with 125 points, as is the Red Bull team in the Constructors’ standings by 36 points with 235.

With practice slated to kick off on Friday morning, let’s take a closer look at how things might shake out in Azerbaijan.

Debuting in 2016 with European Grand Prix, just five Grand Prixs have been hosted in Azerbaijan with no two-time winners in the history of the track. I think we see that trend continue this week in Max Verstappen adding it to his list of circuits where he’s claimed victory.

He was all but guaranteed it last season before his tire exploded and threw him into a barrier in the final laps of the race, as teammate Sergio Perez slid in to claim victory for Red Bull. Perez, of course, comes into this race following his first victory of the season becoming the first driver not named Leclerc or Verstappen to pick up a win this season. He also comes into this race with a brand new two-year extension, racing as well as he has in his career.

With three wins in the course’s six-year history, Mercedes will certainly be primed up this weekend but so far has shown no proof of being worthy of backing this season. Currently in No. 3 by a wide margin behind Red Bull and Ferrari, Mercedes just can’t seem to make the proper adjustment with F1’s new car modifications, despite the vocal frustration from their drivers in George Russell and F1 legend Lewis Hamilton.

Following a race in which he led for 29 laps despite not starting in the pole position, I like for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to get back on track this week and get his revenge on one of the few tracks remaining he hasn’t walked away victorious. As we approach the halfway point of the season, Red Bull will almost certainly start strategically appeasing more elite drivers in Verstappen, as they look to finish 1-2 with Perez now regularly in the hunt.
