SRX Racing Odds: South Boston Speedway Odds, Predictions, and Preview

We had the right idea last weekend by having a Ryan Newman ticket in our pocket for the SRX race at Five Flags. Unfortunately, Helio Castroneves crashed the party and stole the show. Castroneves wasn't supposed to be in the field at the time of publication, and he definitely wasn't on our radar. The sportsbooks can keep the money, but they won't break our spirit even when they add a ringer to the card after we placed our bet.

This weekend, Tony Stewart's Superstar Racing Experience will be tackling South Boston Speedway. Here's something you may not know...this track is in Virginia. I was under the impression Bill Belichick or Julian Edelman might be on hand to wave the green flag.

SRX Odds Breakdown

South Boston is home to a 0.4 mile asphalt track. We love short-track racing at night, and Caesars once again is the first (and only) bookmaker posting odds.

At first glance, we immediately cross off Castroneves at the short number (+240) and Tony Stewart (+250). Castroneves is catching a ridiculous price due to recency bias and Stewart has not yet won on asphalt in the Series. Greg Biffle (+500) and Ernie Francis Jr. (+700) were thoroughly unimpressive last Saturday with Francis even putting his ride in the spin cycle. I don't know who Peyton Sellers is, so let's get him outta here too. Here's a look at the complete odds.

NameOdds
Helio Castroneves+240
Tony Stewart+250
Greg Biffle+500
Marco Andretti+600
Ernie Francis Jr+700
Tony Janaan+800
Peyton Sellers+1000
Ryan Neweman+1200
Bobby Labonte+1200
Ryan Hunter-Reay+1200
Michael Waltrip+2000
Paul Tracy+2000

SRX Preview: South Boston Speedway

The biggest surprise of the weekend may have been our horse, Ryan Newman. He rode around in the back half of the pack during the first heat, saving his equipment. Newman finished in the top-4 of the second heat, and even took the lead early in the main feature. Newman flashed his short-track prowess in a completely new vehicle to him, and ultimately finished third after being passed for the runner-up spot on the last lap. We think Newman improve this weekend, but there's a better name on the board.

Since Paul Tracy was not remotely competitive last weekend, we can't blind-fire on the highlighter green Oddsc=hecker car. We'll save that move for next week. Listen, tip of the cap to the OC brain trust for designing the best-looking car on the track. We couldn't be more excited for the merch that comes along with it. SRX Prediction and Best Bet: South Boston Speedway

This week, we're taking Tony Kanaan to win (+800).

Tony Kanaan cashed a bigtime ticket for us a while back in the Indy 500, so we have happy memories of this fella. Kanaan also spent a few laps behind Paul Tracy in the first heat at Five Flags, so we're fairly certain he's an avid reader of our column by now.

This SRX car is not quite a stock car, nor an open-wheel rig or a modified. It is a completely unique race machine, but we saw that the IndyCar drivers have been pretty reliable in this Series. Kanaan is an in-form driver, and will be a huge problem for the field on Saturday. He likely will save his tires a bit more throughout the first two heats, and be in the mix for the win. He was fast all night last Saturday and at 8/1, Kanaan is a must bet!
