2023 NHL Draft Preview

Before we get into the best betting markets for the 2023 NHL Draft, let's take a step back and look at what is likely to happen on Draft Day.

The first two picks look all but decided. We know Connor Bedard is going to go to the Chicago Blackhawks unless a wild trade comes in at the end (we've seen that movie before, right?) but picks 3-5 are where it probably gets interesting.

Adam Fantilli is almost certainly going to go to the Anaheim Ducks at #2, and if he doesn't the Columbus Blue Jackets will be licking their lips at the prospect of taking him at #3.

The real question then comes at #3. Assuming Bedard and Fantilli are off the board, the Blue Jackets are then left with Leo Carlsson or Will Smith at No.3. There has been some buzz around Smith leapfrogging Carlsson here, even if the odds favor the latter, but this decision could have a domino effect on picks 4 and 5.

The Columbus Blue Jackets will be on the clock at #3 and whilst they would love for center, Adam Fantilli to fall to them, it looks like they will have to settle for the next best center in the draft, Leo Carlsson.

There is some talk that Will Smith could go in the #3 spot, but it seems unlikely that the Blue Jackets would pass up on both Fantilli and Carlsson to take Smith, no matter how talented he is.

Will Smith (no, not the Fresh Prince) will likely go in the No.4 spot, and the San Jose Sharks will be more than happy to take a shot on the young superstar.

If Leo Carlsson does fall to this spot, the Sharks may feel obliged to take him, but the sportsbooks are also entertaining the idea that San Jose takes the Russian forward, Matvei Michkov in this spot.
