2023 NHL Draft Preview
Before we get into the best betting markets for the 2023 NHL Draft, let's take a step back and look at what is likely to happen on Draft Day.
The first two picks look all but decided. We know Connor Bedard is going to go to the Chicago Blackhawks unless a wild trade comes in at the end (we've seen that movie before, right?) but picks 3-5 are where it probably gets interesting.
Adam Fantilli is almost certainly going to go to the Anaheim Ducks at #2, and if he doesn't the Columbus Blue Jackets will be licking their lips at the prospect of taking him at #3.
The real question then comes at #3. Assuming Bedard and Fantilli are off the board, the Blue Jackets are then left with Leo Carlsson or Will Smith at No.3. There has been some buzz around Smith leapfrogging Carlsson here, even if the odds favor the latter, but this decision could have a domino effect on picks 4 and 5.
Let's look at the odds for each of the top 5 picks in the NHL Draft, outside of Connor Bedard who the sportsbooks won't even take bets on going at #1.
2023 NHL Draft Odds: Who Will be Taken Second Overall?
Adam Fantilli looks like a lock to go to the Anaheim Ducks, and if he doesn't we would be incredibly surprised. The best odds on Fantilli going #2 are -600, which suggests there is an 87.5% chance he goes behind Connor Bedard.
DraftKings Sportsbook despite making Fantilli a huge favorite, are also taking odds on several players in this category, here are some other frontrunners for the No.2 pick.
Number 2 Overall Pick | Odds |
---|---|
Adam Fantilli | -600 |
Leo Carlsson | +425 |
Matvei Michkov | +2500 |
Will Smith | +3000 |
If anyone is going to leapfrog Fantilli, it might be Leo Carlsson, but that still seems unlikely.
2023 NHL Draft Odds: Who will be Taken Third Overall?
The Columbus Blue Jackets will be on the clock at #3 and whilst they would love for center, Adam Fantilli to fall to them, it looks like they will have to settle for the next best center in the draft, Leo Carlsson.
Number 3 Overall Pick | Odds |
---|---|
Leo Carlsson | -200 |
Will Smith | +160 |
Adam Fantilli | +650 |
Matvei Michkov | +2000 |
There is some talk that Will Smith could go in the #3 spot, but it seems unlikely that the Blue Jackets would pass up on both Fantilli and Carlsson to take Smith, no matter how talented he is.
2023 NHL Draft Odds: Who will be Taken Fourth Overall?
Will Smith (no, not the Fresh Prince) will likely go in the No.4 spot, and the San Jose Sharks will be more than happy to take a shot on the young superstar.
Number 4 Overall Pick | Odds |
---|---|
Will Smith | -160 |
Leo Carlsson | +200 |
Matvei Michkov | +500 |
David Reinbacher | +900 |
If Leo Carlsson does fall to this spot, the Sharks may feel obliged to take him, but the sportsbooks are also entertaining the idea that San Jose takes the Russian forward, Matvei Michkov in this spot.
Other ways to bet on the NHL Draft
Here are some other betting markets for the 2023 NHL Draft
- Over/Under Draft Position - Bet on a player's chances of going over/under the sportsbook-set line for their draft position. For example, you can bet on Axel Sandin Pellikka Draft Position, and whether he will go Over 14.5/Under 14.5. If he goes 14th or earlier, the under will hit. Any other position and the over will hit.
- NHL Draft Matchups (Player to be Drafted First) - You can also pit two players head-to-head and bet on which player will be taken first in the draft. For example, will Brayden Yager (-185) be taken in the draft before Calum Ritchie (+150)?
NHL Draft Picks, Predictions
If you are looking for a bet tonight, we would seriously urge you to consider taking a shot at Will Smith going #3 in the NHL Draft. There is plenty of buzz around him and some Mock Drafts have him going here, and at +210 with FanDuel Sportsbook, he makes for an interesting bet, in what might otherwise be an uneventful NHL Draft.
