Alabama vs. Georgia Preview

In an abbreviated college football season like we’re experiencing in 2020, one loss can mean even more to a team than it has in the past.

This week, when No. 3 Georgia and No. 2 Alabama meet at Bryant-Denny Stadium, one of the two will walk away with a loss and an uphill battle toward their quest for a National Championship.

Luckily for both, they’re on different sides of the conference from one another, but with Florida and Tennessee looming in the East and Texas A&M and Auburn just a game back from Alabama in the West, a trip to the SEC title game is far from a guarantee for either team.

Alabama

The Alabama Crimson Tide have demolished the competition in each of their first three games. Wins over Missouri, Texas A&M and Ole Miss have them ranked 2nd in the country, and a lot of that has to do with the play of their offense.

In some years past, Alabama has relied on its defense to keep teams off the board while a steady run game and consistent passing game breaks down the opposing defense.

This season, Mac Jones, Najee Harris, Jaylen Waddle, Devonta Smith and the rest of the Alabama offense are taking the top off of opposing defences.

Jones has thrown for 1,101 yards and 8 touchdowns while completing 79.5% of his passes. Waddle and Smith give the Tide the best duo of wide receivers in the country and Harris is next on a long list of talented running backs to come through Tuscaloosa.

If Georgia is going to pull off the upset on Saturday, they’ll need to find a way to slow down the Tide on offense.

Georgia

Georgia comes into Saturday giving up just 12.33 points per game to opposing offenses and pitched a shutout in the second half of last week’s win over No. 14 Tennessee. The UGA defense is most likely the best in the SEC, and has an argument for the nation’s top unit.

Like Mac Jones at Alabama, Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett is in his first year starting under center for the Bulldogs. He’s been a bit up and down, but is still yet to throw an interception on the season and has a 93.1 QBR.

It’s going to be up to Bennett, Zamir White and Kearis Jackson to take advantage of an Alabama defense that is significantly weaker than it’s been in the past, as we saw when Lane Kiffin and Ole miss put up 48 points on them.

With the LSU-Georgia game postponed, all eyes will be on this one.

Alabama vs. Georgia Betting Breakdown

As of Wednesday, Alabama is a 6-point favorite this weekend against Georgia, which seems like an awful lot of points between the No. 3 and No. 2 teams in the country.

Having said that, the last time Georgia beat Alabama was in 2007, as Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno and Mohamed Massaquoi took the field for the Bulldogs.

On the moneyline, Alabama’s best odds sit at -215, but their worst odds are a little shorter at -235. At -215, oddsmakers are implying a 68.3% chance the Tide keep up their winning ways against UGA.

Georgia is +188 to win outright, which gives them just a 34.7% shot at breaking their losing skid.
