It was a long road to the top for Pantoja, who joined the UFC in 2016 via The Ultimate Fighter and bounced around the division picking up early wins against Brandon Moreno, Matt Schnell, and Ulka Sasaki. The run started in 2021, however, picking up a win over Manel Kape before rattling off two more to set up his rematch with Moreno, this time for the belt. After a razor-thin split decision win, Pantoja dominated in his first title defense, piecing up Brandon Royval in December.Â

Mostly speaking to just how shallow this flyweight division is, the road to the top for Erceg was much shorter, as he joined the UFC less than a year ago with a June 2023 win over David Dvorak. Picking up wins in the time since versus Alessandro Costa and Matt Schnell, Erceg could make history with one of the fastest ascents to a title in UFC history.
