Wooden Award Odds: Luka Garza Clear Favorite In Three-Way Race

The Wooden Award is given each year to the best player in the NCAA. That doesn’t necessarily mean that this award is going to be won by the top NBA prospects in the game. In fact, since 2010 only two top-five picks have won the award; Zion Williamson and  Anthony Davis. So, don’t expect the likes of Cade Cunningham, Jalen Suggs, or Evan Mobley to be in the conversation.

In fact, the three favorites to win the award are all currently expected to be drafted in the late first or early second round. As things stand now, Luka Garza is the clear favorite to win the award.

The Iowa center is averaging 24.7 points on 56% shooting with 8.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. The senior has Iowa a lock for the NCAA tournament, and a potential contender for the National Championship. Oddsmakers love Garza, as he’s given -500 odds.

Behind Garza is Illinois guard Ayo Dosunmu. The junior is averaging 21.2 points on 49.4 % shooting with 6.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game. He’s been arguably the best guard in college basketball this year, and he has Illinois looking at a potential number one seed in the NCAA tournament. Oddsmakers are giving Dosunmu a chance, but only a slim one as he’s at +1500.

Also in the race is Baylor guard Jared Butler. The junior has the worst numbers among the top three averaging just 17 points on 49.3% shooting with 5.2 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game. However, Butler is running the offense for an undefeated team. Baylor currently sits as a lock for a number one seed at 17-0. As good as Iowa and Illinois have been, neither can touch Baylor’s dominant performance led by Butler. That’s why Oddsmakers like Butler just as much Dosunmu at +1500.

The race coming to a finish with just a few games left before conference tournament games come. Garza is the favorite, but it’s not out of reach for Dosunmu and Butler yet.
