Which Horse is Going to Win the Grand National?
The Grand National winner is not always the favourite. Between 1994 and 2019 the horse that was the favourite has only won the race six times.
With 30 fences, and more than five miles to run, it's no surprise that a lot can happen during the race. Often horses can fall, unseat their rider, or be pulled up before the end of the race.
Analysing Past Grand National Winners
Picking the right horses for the Grand National requires the examination of several factors and trends. Some of the factors that our horse racing experts consider when making their Grand National predictions include the horse's age, its past performance, how frequently it has raced recently, and its weight.
Horse Age and Stamina
Younger horses do not tend to perform well in the Grand National. Its long-running distance and 30 fences make it more suited to older horses that have better stamina.
The majority of past winners of the race have been horses aged 8 to 11. A horse younger than 8 has not won the Grand National since 1940.
As well as being the right age, horses usually need to have experience of competing in races that are at least 3 miles in length as this demonstrates their stamina.
Weight
A horse's weight has a big influence on their odds of winning. Only seven Grand National races since 1945 have been won by horses weighing more than 11st 5lbs. Two of these wins were by Red Rum, the only horse to win the race three times.
Experience & Preparation
The Grand National is the most high profile horse race in Britain. Top races like it attract the toughest competition from the best horses and most skilled jockeys.
Grand National tipsters will look for horses that have form of succeeding in other major races like ones during the Cheltenham Festival and the Irish National. All but one of the Grand National winners since 2000 had already placed in a graded race, before they attempted the race at Aintree.
Horses also need to have experience of jumping. The fences at Aintree Racecourse are large and difficult to traverse, therefore the horses that succeed are the ones that have typically run at least 10 other races over fences.
Trainers must also be careful not to over or underrun the horse in the lead up to the race too. In recent years, horses that have placed in races like the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival have succeeded in the Grand National.
Have They Raced at Aintree Before?
Horses that have already raced at Aintree Racecourse before can also be at a slight advantage. This may be a previous Grand National, or another event like the Topham Chase or the Becher Chase.
The likely favourite Corach Rambler has famously raced and won at the track before (in last year's renewal!), but I Am Maximus is a fancied runner that doesn't have any track experience.
Who is Favourite to Win the Grand National?
While the Grand National favourites don't always win, they are a good indicator of which horses are likely to perform well.
With 40 horses taking part in the Grand National, most bookmakers pay out on each way bets down to 4th, 5th or 6th place, meaning Grand National favourites can still be a good bet, even if they aren't the first horse to cross the finishing post.

Types of Grand National Bets
Like with all horse racing betting, there are a few types of bet you can place on horses in the Grand National. Here are the main two:
To Win
This is the most simple bet, as it involves you just deciding which horse you think will be a Grand National winner.
Each Way
A bet each way is essentially two bets. The first is a bet on the horse to win, the other is for it to "place". A place bet pays out if the horse finishes in a set number of places, usually between 2nd and 4th, although some bookmakers increase the number of places to 5th or 6th in the Grand National. If your horse places you get a proportion of the odds, usually 1/4 or 1/5.

What is the Grand National?
The Grand National is the biggest horse race in the UK, watched by more than 8 million people who cheer on their chosen horse trackside and at home. It is a 4 mile, 514 yard handicap steeplechase that features some famous fences like Beecher's Brook, Canal Turn, and The Chair.
It has the largest purse of all horse races in the UK, with a total of £1 million of prize money handed out to the runners.
It is a big part of British culture, and is popular amongst people who follow horse racing throughout the year and people that only watch and place bets on the Grand National.
This popularity means there is a lot of demand for Grand National tips and predictions.

When is the Grand National?
The Grand National 2024 takes place on Saturday 13th April, with a post time of 4:00 PM. With a race time of around 9 to 11 minutes, the Grand National winner should be declared before 4:30 PM.
Where is the Grand National?
The Grand National is held at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. Getting there is easy, with a Merseyrail train station directly outside the entrance to the racecourse, and several bus services from Liverpool City centre and Bootle.
Special services will be operated by Merseyrail, and they have offered free flip flops to passengers in recent years so they can change out of their high heels when their feet are tired. More information can be found from either Merseyrail or Mersey Travel.
Travel companies will also be offering special Grand National packages that will take you there by coach. Check with a reputable travel agency for more information.
There is limited car parking at Aintree Racecourse and you should check with the venue directly.
How Can I Watch the Grand National on TV?
The Grand National is available on free to air TV in the United Kingdom. Live coverage is provided by ITV who have aired the race since 2017.
You can tune in via Freeview, Virgin Media, or Sky TV, as well as stream the race through the ITV website and the ITV Player app for those wanting to watch the race on the go.
Subscription channel RacingTV will also be providing coverage of the race, as will several bookmakers who will stream the Grand National through their websites.
More than 8 million people are expected to tune in to watch Grand National 2024, and another 600 million from around the world. It's no surprise then that the race's official slogan is "The World is Watching".
Are There Other Races at the Grand National?
Yes. The Grand National is the feature race that takes place on the third and final day of the Grand National Festival. There will be a total of 21 races taking place, with seven being held on each day of the Festival.
