Cheltenham key stats

The first racing to take place at Cheltenham was in 1861 as part of the National Hunt Chase, and the first time it was called the Cheltenham Festival was 1907.

Its total prize money of more than £4.5 million put it second only to the Grand National, which is held at Aintree Racecourse.

More than 270,000 people attend the Cheltenham Festival each year.

There are 28 races making up the Cheltenham Festival, spread over four days. Each day has a championship race, with the Gold Cup taking place on the last day of the festival.

Cheltenham courses

The Cheltenham Festival is a unique event in the horse racing calendar in that it has two separate tracks. These are known as the Old Course and the New Course. Both are left-handed, testing circuits with the Old Course being a mile-and-a-half in length, while the New Course is half a furlong longer.

The Old Course is used for the first two days of the Cheltenham Festival, with the New Course being used for the second two.

The two separate courses mean there is a huge variety of racing that takes place across the 28 races of the Cheltenham Festival. This means it truly lives up to its name of ‘The Greatest Show on Turf’. This is why Oddschecker provide detailed Cheltenham tips to help you choose the right bet for every single race over the four days.
