It’s that time of the season, just when you think all the drama is over, the EFL playoffs give us one final chance to relive all the highs and lows that the 46 game season has already delivered.

With the Championship playoff action not due to be underway until Sunday 12th, we take a look at the state of play after the first legs in the third tier of English football.

League One Playoff Predictions

It was Yorkshire vs Lancashire as Barnsley hosted Bolton at Oakwell on May 3rd, with a Dion Charles inspired Bolton taking the ascendency for Ian Evatt’s side who take a 3-1 lead into Tuesday’s second leg.

Meanwhile, in the other fixture, 5th placed Oxford welcomed 4th placed Peterborough to the Kassam on May 4th. Just a single goal separated the two sides, coming courtesy of Oxford centre back, Elliot Moore.

Bolton Wanderers were in the hunt for automatic promotion virtually all season, but eventually finished five points shy of Derby. However, Barnsley do have pedigree when it comes to League One promotion having finished second in 2018/19 and also via the playoffs in 2015/16.

But, given that they finished a whopping 11 points behind of Bolton, are currently managerless, and have to contend with a two-goal deficit in the second leg, it’s tricky to bet against The Trotters making their way to Wembley.

Peterborough vs Oxford presents a more complex conundrum. Both had relatively strong home and away records, and both dismantled the other on their respective home turfs during the regular season.

I anticipate Oxford holding onto what they’ve got and nabbing another 1-0 win. But, Peterborough were the top scorers during the 46-game season, so if anyone can bring goals, it’s them.

League One Playoff Tips

Bolton hosts Barnsley on Tuesday at 8pm, and the hosts are currently 8/11 (Star Sports) to win. Plus, Barnsley are winless in their last five, including four losses and stand at 18/5 (Coral) to win.

Dion Charles is the best tip here. 4/1 (bet365) for the Bolton marksman to be the first goalscorer is an excellent price, while he comes in at 13/10 to score anytime.

A Bolton-based-build is well worth constructing too.

20:00 Wednesday

Peterborough entertain Oxford at London Road on Wednesday at 8pm, and the odds on this one are much closer. The hosts are 23/20 for victory (BetMGM), with the visitors rated at decent looking 11/5.

The goalscorers market is lively in this one too, with Elliot Moore the pick at 14/1 (Sky Bet) to score anytime. He was imposing in both boxes in the first half - at 6 foot 5, you would expect him to be a real threat again.
